Theme: The Digital Print
Can a computer-generated image, printed with a jet ink printer on archival paper be considered a real «print»? This topic has sparked a lot of lively discussion on this forum and prompted the idea for an exchange based on this theme. The Quebec printmakers' code of ethics has been pondering over these questions for many years and has come to describe it as follows:
" Digital printing creates processes and stores images as maps in the computer's memory. These maps divide each component element of the image into a matrix called a «bitmap»."
Using software, artists manipulate each element: pixels or selected groups. They may change the color of a single pixel, select a group of pixels, adjacent or not, copy this selection and paste it into another part of the image or replace it outright with another selection from another image. Using the mouse, the stylus of a digital drawing slate, or the computer keyboard, artists can manipulate the ensemble of elements - hence the overall image - to enhance or soften colors by reducing or increasing contrast. Artists can distort images, stretching them in any direction, duplicating them at will, adding texture, fading, applying endless effects. Other tools in their arsenal include digital scanners, modems, etc."
The exchange will be via post on archival paper as usual. This allows the use of combined digital/traditional methods and also reflects the majority view. All decisions concerning how the image is created and printed are up to the discretion of the artist.
