U.S. leader highlights combative spirit of the Cuban Five

BY ARNALDO MUSA—Granma daily staff writer—

“WE really need to have the same combative spirit as those five heroes,” affirmed Sam Webb, chairman of the Communist Party USA, during a meeting with the relatives of Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René.

“It is ironic that these men should be fighting against terrorism and find themselves imprisoned in the ‘age of combating terrorism.’ This Bush administration is hypocritical, it lies all the time, but I am sure that we will win,” Webb added. He is on a visit to Cuba at the invitation of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

His delegation also includes members of his party’s national committee, Terrie Albano, editor of the People’s Weekly World, the party organ, and Juan López, party chairman in northern California. Officials from the Department of International Relations of Cuban Central Committee attended the meeting.

In a fraternal environment, the relatives of the five Cuban heroes provided details of all the vicissitudes to which they have been subjected by the current U.S. administration in order to prevent them visiting with their loved ones.

In turn, Webb commented that it was an honor for him to talk to people with so much courage and spirit.

“I would like for us to meet under different circumstances. We share the pain you feel as a result of the injustice being done to your loved ones, and we also share your sadness. We will do everything possible to carry out a campaign for their release in the United States,” he affirmed.

After emphasizing that the United States has had a wrong presidency in recent years, Webb recalled that at the start of the Cold War, during the 1950s, the leader of the Communist Party was sent to jail for the crime of thinking.

“When we return to our country, we will publicize this case in order to tell the truth. We believe that this battle can be won. We assure you that we will do everything possible to free your loved ones,” stated Webb.
