Damage Assessment and Restoration

Damage Assessment and Restoration within the NPS involves providing guidance for the appropriate and consistent application of Federal damage assessment and restoration statutes (including the Park System Resource Protection Act), and coordinating and managing NPS damage assessment and restoration activities.

Damage assessment and restoration activities are often required to fund and implement restoration when NPS resources are injured by others. Examples of incidents that can cause resource injuries include ship groundings, oil and hazardous substance spills, fires, boundary encroachments, and motor vehicle accidents.

Specifically our functions include:

  • Development of damage assessment and restoration policy and guidance.
  • Coordination and management of NPS damage assessment and restoration activities.
  • Provision of training and technical assistance for damage assessment and restoration activities.
  • Serving as primary liaison with outside entities involved in NPS damage assessment and restoration activities, including the DOI Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Program office, DOI Office of the Solicitor, U.S. Department of Justice, and other state and federal natural resource trustees.
