Fire Management (07/2005)

Fire is one way nature maintains a landscape. Without the culling, recycling, and regenerative contributions of fire, a dynamic fire-dependent ecosystem becomes a stagnant garden, with less plant and animal diversity. Whether started by lightning, lava, or people, each fire is unique. Fire is a jolt to living systems, the beginning of a new stage of life on the land. National parks protect and encourage nature at work and National Park Service policy stresses managing fire, not simply suppressing it. This means planning for the inevitable and promoting the use of fire as a land management tool. The goal is to restore fire's role as a dynamic and necessary natural process. more »

Wind Cave National Park (12/2003 - 04/2004)

In July 2003, park staff at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota working in conjunction with a paleontologist from the Geologic Resource Division were on a routine investigation of fossil sites in the park when something caught their attention. It was a very large set of fossil teeth. Careful study revealed that these were the teeth of an ancient hornless rhinoceros - Subhyracodon occidentalis. ... more »
