Brucellosis

Disease Bovine brucellosis (Brucella abortus)
Primary Wildlife Affected Elk and Bison
Distribution Greater Yellowstone Area including Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
NPS Management Activities Interagency Bison Management Plan for the State of Montana and Yellowstone National Park which maintains a wild, free-ranging bison population and addresses the risk of brucellosis transmission to protect the livestock industry. This adaptive management plan uses many tools to address the risk of transmission, but primarily relies upon spatial and temporal separation of bison and cattle. A Bison and Elk Management Plan for the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park is currently in review. Cooperative research continues on brucellosis epidemiology, bison and elk ecology, and development of an effective remotely-delivered wildlife vaccine.
