Contributing Information to GENUKI Pages
The continued success of GENUKI
(a GENealogical Information Service for the UK & Ireland)
depends on people like you and I, combining our knowledge and experience.
Our "Mission" is to be a Virtual Reference Library, for which we collect
transcriptions of primary historical sources - Parish Register, Census
and Directories, together with details of Archives and Libraries,
Bibliography, Civil Registration, Church History, &c.
We do not however collect personal family histories.
Nevertheless, basic facts are useful - local residents often take for granted what
may be vital knowledge for others; so don't hold back if you - or one of your
ancestors - has a special story to tell!
If you have information you'd like to share, and you just want
to know how to tell us about it, please go straight to the
Form lower down this page. Otherwise please read on for further details of the
information we are hoping to attract.
For example look at pages with plenty of information -
Eyam
(DBY), or
Bristol
(GLS); and local snippets on
Spondon
('A Village Remembered') and
Foolow
('William Elliott of Foolow').
That's bound to give you some ideas of what has already been contributed.
I am particularly interested if you have, or know of any of the
following:-
- Transcripts of primary source material, such as Census,
Directories, or Parish Registers (but please see the note below
about copyright).
- Do you have your own Local History site? If so, I will be
delighted to add a link to it from the appropriate page.
- Do you know any details of pre-20th Century Education in your
town/city/village? I have a particular interest in collecting information about
Schools.
- Do you know of any Good Books which have been published about
your town/city/village? It would be appreciated if you could supply full publishing
details ISBN, price, &c. I find it especially useful to record the existence
of village books which are no longer in print; it may then be possible for
interested parties to order them through the 'ILL' (Inter-Library Loan) service,
but without the knowledge of the books' existence, that can't happen!
- Do you have copies of any Wills your ancestors may have made?
I look after has a collection of Abstracts of Wills from several counties - for
example
Derbyshire Probate Records (Wills), to
include ALL names mentioned, whether related to the testator, or
otherwise - the more Wills which are added, the more useful
these collections will become.
Whilst you're thinking about what you might be able to
contribute, please also bear in mind the following provisos:-
- Format -
Unless it is a "must have" for me[1],
I regret I cannot volunteer to transcribe source material from hard copy, or
scanned images, as I already have piles of untranscribed material of my own,
which must take precedence, so it needs to be in electronic (text) form -
plain ASCII text (preferred), Word processor Document, or Spreadsheet please.
- Source -
I will need to know the source of your information, with any
references you may have, though please do not send material that
is someone else's copyright without permission.
- Copyright -
If you are passing on information given to you by someone
else, or are providing full transcriptions from original source documents
in a Record Office, please seek permission first for them to be made
available, as it would be a breach of protocol for me to enquire on your
behalf. Note: early copyright (of printed material) within the European
Union is 70 years from the death of the author, whilst the manuscript
sources of parish records are covered by a 'perpetual' copyright. See
New General Catalog of Old Books and Authors and
Archive CD Books Parish Register Series (Reproductions) for additional information.
- Acknowledgment -
Under normal circumstances I will try to acknowledge your
contribution immediately, but 'please allow up to 28 days for delivery' -
that is, for the information to appear on the web. All contributions will
of course have appropriate acknowledgment of your contribution by
default, so please do let me know if for any reason you'd rather remain
anonymous, or if you would prefer your e-mail address to be withheld.
Thank you. I'll look forward to hearing from you.
Please contact me using the Form below, supplying me with
brief details of what you would like to contribute:
Please do not include HTML (web page) encoding in your message.
THANK YOU!!!

Information relating to Eyam, Grindleford, or Stoney Middleton in Derbyshire,
or Donnington in Herefordshire would count as "must-haves"!
