'Pre-Victorian Baslow'

In 1823 The Duke of Devonshire exchanged lands with the Duke of Rutland, and acquired the part of Baslow west of the Bar Brook and south of the Baslow to Chesterfield Road (the A619). Apart from Gibbet Moor, the land was occupied by tenant Farmers. In order to extend his park some of the tenants had to be moved. The Table below lists all the Tenants, and their fate after the park was extended.
The information is based on data kindly made available by the Archivists at Chatsworth, the Census 1841, and the Tithe Award of 1848.

Tenants of Land above Dobb Edge, between Robin Hood and Park Gate Farm, were unaffected

	Bestwick James	13 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Bettany Joseph	27 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Bettany Richard	10 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Brown Thomas	3 rood	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Daniel William	14 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Hollingsworth Benjamin	19 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Hulley William	10 perch	Stayed at Nether End across brook
	Jenkinson Ralph	3 rood	Moved into his own property at Nether End
	Marple Matthew	1 rood	May have moved into Baslow

	Alsop Sampson	9 acre	Farm on old Turnpike. Got house in Edensor
	Boam Thomas	16 acre	Park Lane Farm. Was in Thatched Cottage in 1841
	Bowler Sampson	72 acre	Farm on old Turnpike nr Nether End. Gone by 1841
	Brightmore John	16 acre	No house, so lived in Baslow. Aged 58 - ? retired
	Johnson William	9 acre	Lived at Nether End. Gone by 1841
	Marsden George	44 acre	Heathy Lea House. Got Tenancy in Dore
	Marsden Robert	9 acre	Heathy Lea Corn Mill. Got Tenancy in Edensor
