The Writer's Brush

“The Writer’s Brush” is an exhibition based on Donald Friedman’s book “The Writer’s Brush: Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture by Writers” (Mid-List), which comes out in September. The exhibit, curated by Friedman, includes more than a hundred and twenty unique works by eighty of the world’s most celebrated writers who were also artists, including New Yorker writers and contributors such as James Thurber, Vladimir Nabokov, Jonathan Lethem, Annie Proulx, Charles Simic, Mark Strand, and Derek Walcott.

New York, N.Y.: “The Writer’s Brush,” Anita Shapolsky Gallery, September 11-October 27.

William Steig

William Steig (1907-2003) has been hailed as the “King of Cartoons” for his long and acclaimed career as both a cartoonist and an award-winning author of children’s books, including “Shrek!” (1990). Steig grew up in the Bronx and began illustrating for The New Yorker in 1930. In his prolific association with the magazine, he produced over sixteen hundred drawings and approximately a hundred and twenty covers. In honor of the centennial of Steig’s birth, the Jewish Museum presents an exhibition that will pay tribute to his creativity by featuring a wide selection of his original drawings for his New Yorker cartoons and for his children’s books. This in-depth presentation will also shed light on his life as it related to his work, and will be complemented by a series of programs for both adults and children.

New York, N.Y.: “William Steig,” Jewish Museum, November 3, 2007-March 16, 2008.
