An
introduction to the world of Brooklyn North.
The area comprises 10 of New York's most
violent precincts, where 30 detectives investigate
more than 130 homicides a year. First case:
a victim is found shot to death on the steps
of a house in the Bushwick neighborhood. After
an all-night marathon of interrogations, a
marijuana dealer nicknamed "the Dread" is
identified as the prime suspect. Detectives
Sullivan, Sloan and Monzert then begin a lengthy
stakeout, which leads to a tip about the Dread's
hiding place. Along the way the detectives
discuss how they cope with the extraordinary
stress of their jobs. Mixed in is an introduction
to the ongoing hunt for a serial killer, "The
Brooklyn Strangler." Five female victims have
already been found; the killer's signature
is the victims' shoelaces tied around their
necks. Detectives Valentin, Martinez and Lieutenant
Heffernan re-examine the rooftop scene where
the first victim was found. They voice their
frustrations and urgency to crack the case
before there's another victim. The episode
ends with a new crime - an abandoned newborn
has been discovered in a waste recycling plant.
