Jessie Davis Murder

Reporter Todd Porter on the case of Bobby Cutts, accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend

July 2, 2007

Court TV Host: Discuss the Bobby Cutts case with Canton Repository reporter Todd Porter, who interviewed Cutts. Former police officer Bobby Cutts Jr. is charged with murdering his girlfriend, Jessie Davis, who was nine months pregnant when she disappeared. Todd Porter, as most of you know, was on Court TV earlier today, on The Best Defense, with Jami Floyd, and he's joining us here now.

Todd Porter: Hello all. The preliminary hearing was anti-climactic today. Both Bobby Cutts and Myisha Ferrell waived their preliminary hearing rights and it goes straight to grand jury now.

Court TV Host: By the way, if you'd like to listen to Todd Porter's interview with Bobby Cutts, you can find it at www.cantonrep.com

Question from Lexi-Atl: Todd, what information do you have about the number of hours Blake spent in the house alone?

Todd Porter: Good question. Police aren't giving any details as to that. Everyone assumes Blake spent 30 some odd hours alone. I don't know if I'm ready to believe that at this point. I think this is one of the issues they are talking about when they say it's an ongoing investigation. I have kids myself and they're a little older than Blake. I can't imagine them being left alone for 30 some hours and doing virtually no damage to themselves.

Question from JaneTruth: Are there any further charges against Myisha?

Todd Porter: As of right now, no. However, the Canton City Prosecutor, Frank Forchione, indicated today there could be. It was the only piece of new information presented. Myisha's attorney asked for bond reduction and the prosecutor said she's only charged with obstruction right now because she lied multiple times. Forchione said testimony/evidence by investigators say she helped deposit the body of Jessie M. Davis.

Question from Lolly-In-Ohio: Todd, are you related to Patty Porter?

Todd Porter: You are the first person to ask that question after all the interviews I've done. I am NOT related to Patty Porter, but she seems to handle herself very well under trying circumstances.

Question from Lexi-Atl: What is your impression of him; since you have spoken with him, does he seem like a sociopath to you?

Todd Porter: I am not trained to know what a sociopath is, however, he seemed like a guy who was exhausted on all levels. If he is found guilty, I am surprised he went more than a week without being arrested. When I talked to him, he seemed like a guy who just wanted his normal life back. I don't know if that will ever happen, one way or the other now. He has seemed to be soft-spoken in the past, funny, almost charming on a level. But I don't think any of us every really know someone unless we spend 24-7 with them.

Question from hammy: Todd, initially after you interviewed Cutts you appeared to support him and defend him publicly. What did he say to you that won you over initially?

Todd Porter: I would disagree that I "supported" him. I think I tried to remain objective throughout this process and open-minded to every possibility. That is what a reporter's job is. I didn't defend him, but I've also not tried to try and convict him in the court of public opinion. Every person has a right to his or her day in court. Mr. Cutts will get his and the facts as we will come to know them will be learned

Question from DeliaFangz: Hi Todd! Thanks for joining us. Initially there were so many conflicting reports about Cutts at the bar with a female; then he allegedly called another female who joined them. Was Myisha at the club with him or did he contact her after he left the bar?

Todd Porter: Cutts went to the bar around 9:30 Wednesday night after a softball game. He met a male friend there. The tape from the bar shows them meeting up with two females, but it is unclear whether anyone left together. The bar tape shows him there until about 12:30. I located a woman, whose name we're not giving out because she is married and had an affair with Cutts She said Cutts phoned her from the bar several times and then again, apparently from his car (based on background noise) until about 2 a.m. We don't know if Cutts called Myisha or if someone else did. But police believe she is involved and wasn't being truthful during their investigation But she was not at the bar with him.

Question from Roses4me: Mr. Porter, How long have you known Bobby Cutts?

Todd Porter: I first met him about three and a half years ago. I did a sports-related story on him. He was the local cop who worked the midnight shift and played for a local minor league indoor football team. He made like 200 bucks a game and worked as a cop in town. So it was a human interest sports story. I've seen him at various events working security about six times since that initial story.

Question from JaneTruth: How was he different then as compared to his present demeanor?

Todd Porter: He was much more relaxed and at peace with things then. Obviously, the circumstances were vastly different. Then he had a chance to revive an athletic career. Now he's charged with double murder. Like I said before, he seemed soft-spoken and good-natured before. He liked to laugh and joke. Kind of a happy-go-lucky fellow.

Question from eowyn: Hello Todd, Where does he find all these women? He seems to have been dating quite a few; does he have some sparkling personality?

Question from JaneTruth: What does this guy have to make all these women putty in his hands?

Todd Porter: I could see how women would think he's charming. I'm told when he went out, he usually didn't have a problem meeting ladies whereever it was he was at. I don't know what he has to make them putty, but my guess is most women would see him coming from a mile away.

Question from sabrina: What is the timeframe of the grand jury and is that kept secret?

Todd Porter: Grand jury proceedings are kept secret. There is no timeframe right now, but generally in about 10 days from now the grand jury will have either indicted or no billed the charges. Also, the grand jury can add additional charges if it sees fit.

Question from Mark: Hi, Todd . Do you know if the baby was questioned by the police in a child's way to see if he would say that daddy put mommy in the rug?

Todd Porter: I don't know that for sure, but police would not have done their jobs if this didn't happen. I have to assume a child psychologist spoke with Blake. Keep in mind, a two-year-old's testimony would never be allowed in court, but that doesn't mean investigators can't use it to point them in the right direction. Again, I'm not saying this happened, but I would have to think it did.

Question from Lexi-Atl: Given his history, how in the world did Bobby Cutts get a job with any police department? Didn't he have a TRO before his hiring on at the police department?

Todd Porter: You've got to remember, all he had on his record was a misdemeanor charge of trespassing. There was a boyfriend-girlfriend custody battle at the time. In the background check of Cutts, all that was considered. His girlfriend at the time was in a house in which both she and Cutts lived with another man. That is on the police report. The name is redacted from the report, but Shawn Kemp (former NBA basketball) player was her other boyfriend and she had a child with him.

Question from hammy: Todd, we now learn Cutts had a history of harassing women - a checkered past so to speak - why was he allowed to continue on the force? Were red flags not going off earlier?

Todd Porter: I'm not sure his record would indicate a history of harassing women. He was fired once for his service pistol being stolen by a cousin who was later arrested on a drug charge with Cutts' gun in his possession. Cutts won his job back through arbitration and after a trial acquitted him of wrongdoing. Otherwise a jury believed the gun was stolen by the cousin and not given to him.

Question from Roses4me: If Blake wasn't alone in the house for 30 hours, then where do you think he was?

Todd Porter: That would be pure speculation on my part. I believe police have a good idea if someone else cared for him on Thursday or if he was alone.

Question from Lexi-Atl: There were some reports that the death penalty was taken out of the mix IF Cutts would show police where the body was dumped. Is this true?

Todd Porter: I've heard those reports and in my opinion those are premature. I can't imagine any prosecutor agreeing to take off a capital punishment before an arrest was made. That is something that could be up to the grand jury. If it decides aggravating circumstances exist in these murders. Good question!

Question from perry: Hi Todd do you know if Bobby Cutts admitted to the police anything other than him telling them where Jessie's body could be found, so that he could get life and not the death penalty, if convicted.

Todd Porter: I don't know that. He has a law enforcement background. He communicated with police throughout. We don't know for sure, other than we've reported from a family source, that Cutts led them to the body. My guess is that's one of the reasons the preliminary was waived today. That might've come out during a preliminary hearing. Searchers weren't looking anywhere near where the body was found and all of a sudden two Stark County Sheriff cruisers are in northern Summit County in the metro parks and an arrest is made.

Question from Pisces: Thank you Todd for taking the time to chat with us. I was curious, how are things at the precinct where he served and protected?

Todd Porter: I think a lot of officers are stunned. I think a lot of them are hurt. Morale is hurting, but the police chief there is a good guy (not the chief when Cutts was hired, BTW). I think morale will improve as time heals some of their wounds. Canton has the Pro Football Hall of Fame coming up soon, and police are an important part of that equation in terms of security at all the events. I'm sure they will perform just as they always have

Question from perry: hi Todd. Good to have you here. Has there been any mention of motive yet as to why Cutts could have murdered Jessie Davis? And do you know if the death penalty will be sought in this case?

Todd Porter: Thank you. Glad to be here with you. Police have not mentioned motive. No one has said if it's accidental, if it's premeditated or anything. That will come out soon, I would think. The death penalty could be a factor because Ohio law provides for aggravating circumstances when it comes to the murder of a fetus.

Court TV Host: Thanks for being our guest online today - any closing thoughts?

Todd Porter: I know there is a great deal of interest in this case nationally. I would just ask that people keep the Davis family in their prayers and the Canton community as well. The community just ended a period of grief and mourning over the weekend I'm not sure what stage of that grief will follow next, but Canton and Stark County is a close-knit area. The community will heal from this ... eventually. Thanks for having me and I would come back any time as things develop.
