Court TV's Adaora Udoji on the Virginia Tech shootings

April 16, 2007

Court TV Host: Court TV's Adaora Udoji is here to discuss the Virginia Tech shootings. Thanks, Adaora, for being our guest online today.

Adaora Udoji: I've covered many stories involving violence, but this is more horrific than I could imagine.

Question from have: Are there any names of victims disclosed?

Adaora Udoji: No. Virginia Tech's police chief just spoke and they are not releasing any names yet. They are in the midst of identifying bodies and notifying the next of kin. Chief Wendell Flinchum estimated they would release names sometime tomorrow.

Question from JrJ: Can you clarify what the Police Chief said about why they didn't start a sweep for the shooter immediately after the first shooting? Or did they?

Adaora Udoji: Great question. It is not entirely clear at the moment. Virginia Tech president Charles Steger and the police chief said it went like this: 9-11 call at 7:15 am about a shooting at the West Ambler Johnston Hall, a coed dorm. Police responded immediately, say officials. They found a dead male and female. After interviewing witnesses and securing the crime scene, the police chief says they believed the area was secure. He did not say what information led to that belief.

Question from have: Exactly how many are dead and injured?

Adaora Udoji: Another good question. Police chief says 31 people including the gunmen were killed at the Norris building, an engineering building. Total 33 dead there. At the dormitory there were two dead. In addition, officials say there are 15 at local hospitals. Here's an interesting fact: they also say that some of those 15 were actually injured after jumping out of windows from the Norris bldg. They didn't say how many.

Question from Theresa: Do you think the death toll will go higher?

Adaora Udoji: It is entirely possible the death toll could tragically go higher. The conditions of the wounded have not been released yet.

Question from keliz: When will we get the name of the gunman?

Adaora Udoji: Good one, Keliz. Get this, according to Police Chief Wendell Flinchum, police have not be able to identify the gunman yet. Why? He was not carrying any identification. So Chief said detectives are trying to figure out who he is.

Question from Crys: It was reported the shooter committed suicide. Is this true?

Adaora Udoji: Crys, yes, according to Virginia Tech police, the gunman's wound was self-inflicted.

Question from LauraCA: Has it been confirmed it was just one shooter?

Adaora Udoji: LauraCA, well, that's actually a tough one to answer. All day it has been reported that a lone gunman went on the shooting spree on the campus. However, an hour ago, the police chief seemed to suggest that police are not entirely convinced that the two campus crime scenes are connected. In other words the police chief suggested that the dorm shooting which they initially thought seemed to be a domestic situation and the engineering shooting spree may or may not be related. If they are not related, then it stands to reason the shootings would involve two shooters? But totally unclear at the moment. At this time police have confirmed one shooter, so we will see what develops.

Question from Theresa: Was the gunman a student at the university?

Question from thecanary: Was he a student?

Adaora Udoji: Yup, you guys are asking the same things all the reporters did to the University president and police chief. Officials say they don't know. He could be, they are trying to identify him. Chief would not even hazard a guess as to how old the suspect is.

Question from catcord: Why wasn't this campus put on lockdown, if nearby elementary schools can lockdown, why can't this college?

Adaora Udoji: Yup, that's exactly what reporters were hammering Steger and Flinchum on ... they did not divulge the information that led them to believe following the first shooting why they thought the campus was secure. Not clear at all.

Question from oma-va: IMO, considering the size of VA Tech., securing the first crime scene and after interviews, it was thought to be the only incident. So it is easy to understand the time frame.

Adaora Udoji: You're right oma-va ... the campus is 2600 acres, with hundreds of buildings and 26,000 students. This was obviously a tragic and unusual event. But no doubt in the coming days what police knew and when they knew it will become clearer.

Question from tribe: Do you know if any changes were made in security measures after the shooting on the first day of classes in August?

Adaora Udoji: Tribe, THAT is a really good question. I honestly don't know. But will find out.

Question from keliz: Is the shooting related to the bomb scares?

Adaora Udoji: Good one. Not clear. You're right, Virginia Tech police say they've had bomb scares the past two weeks. They are now investigating whether the scares are in any way related to the shootings.

Question from have: How many police and emergency vehicles were there?

Adaora Udoji: Interesting question. I saw one picture that showed at least 15 ambulances lined up. Dozens and dozens of police and sheriff's deputies responded, don't know the exact number. I also know the FBI and the ATF are also now involved.

Question from keliz: Were there faculty wounded?

Adaora Udoji: The police chief was asked that, he said, did not know how many, which suggested that at least one of the victims at the Norris building was a faculty member. But I would expect we will know more tomorrow.

Question from Theresa: I also heard that the gunman was wearing a bullet proof vest - is this true?

Adaora Udoji: That has been reported. But not confirmed. Also not confirmed is why some of the doors were padlocked. The police chief acknowledged some doors were locked, but said it was unclear at this time, why.

Question from Cortaid: Welcome ... isn't kind of risky to analyze the situation this early. It seems, typically, early reports are far from accurate.

Adaora Udoji: Cortaid, you are so right. But we report what we are told by the authorities who should know. I think in part it is the nature of breaking stories, information comes out slowly and sometimes not accurately. That is why journalism is so often referred to as the first draft of history.

Question from scarlett: How can anyone be surprised at his massacre with the loose gun control in this country?

Adaora Udoji: Scarlett, you are no doubt correct the rampage and the massive loss of life will trigger debate on a topic that so many feel so strongly about.

Court TV Host: Any closing thoughts?

Adaora Udoji: Clearly, this story has touched many of you. It has touched us too here at Court TV. It is tragic. And my thoughts are with the victims and their family members.

Court TV Host: Thank you, Adaora, for being our guest today.
