The JonBenet Ramsey Case

Court TV's Catherine Crier discusses the arrest of suspect John Mark Karr

August 16, 2006

Court TV Host: Catherine Crier is here! Welcome, Catherine.

Catherine Crier: Hello everyone!

Question from NicNYC: It has been reported today (on MSNBC) that Karr told Thai interrogators that he picked JonBenet up at her school (no date provided) and entered the house. Could this be why he knew the makeup of the home so well? Have you heard anything to corroborate this alleged and insane statement by Karr?

Catherine Crier: I heard this alleged and insane statement reported, but I have no confirmation that he actually said it. Nor does it make any sense. The child was not in school on Christmas Day, so it could not have happened, and it could not have been the opportunity for him to case the house.

Question from jan_rn: What about the secret room in the basement and how random is that?

Catherine Crier: The room wasn't secret, it was simply off the beaten path. It was virtually unused by the family, so it is highly unlikely that many people outside of the immediate family even knew the room existed.

Question from ctv_warhorse2: When Karr is transported back to the U.S. how will that be done? By commercial airliner or private? If commercial what kind of security would that entail?

Catherine Crier: I expect by commercial airliner. Our tax dollars at work. He should be accompanied by one or two marshals, whether federal or state, I don't know.

Question from Gloria: Did you hear his brother said this am that Karr was with him that Christmas?

Catherine Crier: I don't know about his brother, but his ex-wife, who at the time was married to the man, says that he was with her and the children in Alabama.

Question from luvmysissys: Does anyone know why the cellar room wasn't found for 6 hours??

Catherine Crier: The cellar room wasn't examined for six hours, again, because it was virtually unused by the family. Assuming the family was not involved, I doubt they thought about that being a possible location for their daughter. Additionally, the police were still examining the ransom note and were trying to determine if a kidnapping had occurred.

Question from BostonPat: Hi Catherine - Wasn't it reported that the basement window appeared to be broken from the INSIDE? Is it possible Karr or whoever was IN the house before the murder?

Catherine Crier: According to John Ramsey, he broke the basement window at one point when the front door key was lost. The question has always been, would it be large enough for an intruder to make entrance and exit without leaving any additional signs of utilizing that window.

Question from kiara: Catherine, won't the DNA be the most conclusive evidence?

Catherine Crier: The DNA is something the prosecutor would love to have in this case. DNA has been wrong before due to problems with samples or problems with the testing, but it is a very reliable piece of forensic evidence.

Question from Miriam1: Catherine, why did patsy come under such heavy suspicion of having written the ransom note?

Catherine Crier: I have looked at the handwriting analysis of her penmanship as compared to the ransom note, and I can understand why experts' findings were inconclusive. There were several characteristics, such as how she formed her r's - they were quite unique and eerily similar to those in the ransom note.

Question from Miriam1: Catherine, did the police or FBI ever look at John Karr before this week?

Catherine Crier: Before this latest revelation, I have been unable to find any reference to this man in earlier investigations.

Question from ctvjunkie: Hi Catherine. I know it's been addressed a few times already but I just can't believe that the Boulder District Attorneys Office would go to all this time and trouble to arrest someone simply based on a confession. Especially someone who seems as unstable as this guy does!

Catherine Crier: My thoughts exactly. That is why I have continually pressed my guests over the last twenty-four hours to answer the question, could the DA possibly be acting on the so-called confession of this man alone? Thus far, however, I've heard no evidence beyond Mr. Karr's words. Please note, however, that doesn't mean the DA doesn't have it.

Question from kiara: Catherine, the boulder police bungled so much of the crime scene...how do we know that the DNA found on JonBenet was not contaminated?

Catherine Crier: We don't know the answer to that question. However, Cyril Wecht just stated an hour ago that the DNA found in her underwear was compared to family members and used to eliminate them as the source. It was thus testable. But does that mean it was left by the perpetrator or could it have been a transfer from an innocent party? That question is still unanswered.

Question from pyezahn: When will it be announced if there is or is not a DNA match from the crime scene to the suspect.

Catherine Crier: The $64,000 question. When you find out, let me know. I'll give you my private number.

Question from Paul: When will he return to the US?

Catherine Crier: I expect he will return within the next several days. There may be some investigation they need to conduct about his activities in Thailand and of course any sort of bureaucracy takes time to move. So give them a few days, but it won't be long.

Question from Alison: If Karr is found to be guilty, will the Ramseys have any legal recourse for the scrutiny they suffered?

Catherine Crier: Not likely. The Ramseys have pursued several lawsuits already, but when suing a governmental entity, there is a higher burden you must meet to show conduct was inappropriate and therefore actionable under the law.

Question from eowyn: Is it true Karr is in trouble for child pornography in another country? And is he being punished for it?

Catherine Crier: Karr was arrested back in 2001 on child pornography charges, as I understand it, and that was in California, but apparently there was no conviction. I am unaware of any arrests on such charges in Thailand or anywhere else internationally.

Question from BostonPat: Have any high profile attorneys offered their services to Karr?

Catherine Crier: If they have, it hasn't been reported. If they haven't, I'll bet that happens soon.

Court TV Host: Any closing thoughts?

Catherine Crier: Keep your powder dry on this one. If I had to bet right now, I wouldn't count on an indictment, much less a conviction. Everyone have a good night.

Court TV Host: Thank you!

Court TV Host: Come back soon.
