"The Unlikely Terrorist: Shelley Shannon"

On August 21, 1993, 37-year-old Shelley Shannon, from Grants Pass, Oregon, was arrested for shooting a doctor outside a women's clinic in Wichita, Kansas. The subsequent investigation revealed that Shannon had led a double life. In l992, unbeknownst to her husband and children, she had traveled throughout the west firebombing abortion clinics. She eventually was convicted of attempted murder. Back in Oregon, her family and friends were shocked. They knew Shelley as a highly religious woman and peaceful protestor, not as a person capable of such heinous terrorist acts. One friend commented it was like "hearing that Minnie Mouse just bombed the White House."

Application for a Search Warrant of Shannon's house and property. Includes description of evidence obtained by police in the month following the Tiller shooting. Dated September 24, 1993.

Shannon's journal, recovered by police, where she recounts her criminal activities in detail:

The Army of God manual. A 130 - page terrorist manual written for "the battle against abortion;" It was discovered by police, buried in Shannon's backyard. The manual provides instruction on how to disrupt and even destroy abortion operations. The chapters range from prank-like blocking a clinic's parking lot with garbage to details on how to make plastic explosives and home-made detonator caps. Excerpts from the Manual:

 Letter #1 marked Exhibit "A"
Letter to daughter, Angi, shortly after Shannon was arrested for the August 19, 1993 shooting of Dr. Tiller. Describes how she shot Tiller, her flight and apprehension. Warns daughter not to "dig up my stuff" - which gave the police clues about where her diaries, Army Of God manual, and other evidence was hidden.

 Letter #2 marked E-2-22
In a letter to her daughter from jail Shannon instructs Angi how to dispose of "things," and recounts the shooting in great detail.

Letter #3 marked Gov. Exhibit #25i
Letter to "Ang" from jail where Shannon urges her daughter to mail documents to "my Russian pen pal." Investigators suspect that the "pen pal" might have been someone in league with Shannon to attack abortion clinics and their personnel.

Article Shannon wrote from jail for Prayer & Action weekly news, April 1995. Shannon regrets how much information she gave to " the Feds," and relates how " the Feds operate."
