EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SERVICE
In response to the huge popularity of forensic science and its signature series “Forensic Files®,” Court TV, in partnership with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the National Science Teachers Association, developed “Forensics in the Classroom,” a nationally standard based forensic science curriculum supplement for middle school and high school students. The education units are available to educators to download for free at www.courttv.com/forensics_curriculum.

Forensics in the Classroom” is a comprehensive educational program that combines standard middle school and high school science experiments used in chemistry, biology and physics classes along with the latest forensics techniques. The initiative is presented in five units, each involving a mystery for students to solve. The activities incorporate forensic techniques including fingerprint matching, liquid flame tests, footprint castings and Kastle-Meyer tests, which check for the presence of blood at a crime scene. The equipment and materials required are found in standard high school laboratories.

The exercises are fun and engaging and allow students to use real clues and investigative methods in the experiments. The curriculum supplemental units are designed to demonstrate the application of science to everyday life and introduce students to potential careers in the field.
