Tyrese Gibson eyes Luke Cage movie

Wednesday June 20, 2007, 7:29 am

Although a Power Man adaptation isn’t on Marvel’s list of movies in development, Transformers co-star Tyrese Gibson tells Sci Fi Wire that it’s likely he’ll star as Luke Cage in a film directed by John Singleton.

“They’re doing rewrites on it now, and we actually have a meeting coming up on it soon, from what I hear, just to see where we are with the whole thing,” Gibson said. “Right now they’re in the process of getting the rewrites done, and then they’ll, I guess, do kind of a formal presentation to see if it’s going to be a go.”

Gibson tells Sci Fi Wire he’s met with producer Avi Arad, who’s “very excited about the possibility.”

(Just ignore the bit in the article where Cage is described as “the first black comic-book superhero.”)

  1. Tyrese is perfect for the role…and even more perfect is that John Singleton is set to direct it. A perfect combo all the way.

All they need now is to get The Daughters of the Dragon in the story!

  3. Old news! I remember last year Singleton saying Tyrese would need to bulk up for the role. But I guess Megatron is the best gym.

  4. I agree with Jimmy too.

From the minute that it was announced that Tyrese was up for the role I thought he would be perfect.

I remember a lot of people not liking him for the part but I never for a second felt that way.

I hope this goes though — Sony is still doing it, right?

Speaking of Misty Knight, I wonder if that LITG rumor is for the House of M: Avengers mini or is for something else, like an ongoing? Hopefully it’s the latter.

  5. Eh–he’s “too pretty” but I guess he’ll do.

As long as Danny Rand is in the flick–this movie will be awesome.

  6. He looks more like Silver Surfer in that picture!

  7. Was he the first black comic-book superhero to have his own title, maybe?

  8. Bendis and Fraction need to get to on a ongoing series. Cause, that would be awesome.

  10. No disrepect to Tyrese but hes just too small to play Cage. He could possibly (and I say this lightly) pull it off through bulking up, pumping x amount of iron. How about somebody like the wwe wrestler Bobby Lashley. he would be perfect for the role. But bearing in mind Michael Keaton is 5 foot 8 and yet he bagged the role of Batman/ Bruce Wayne who is depicted being several inches taller and significantly muscular.

  11. I’d rather have a musclar guy who is a good actor than a really muscular guy who isn’t an actor at all. Sure, I’d love it if Tyrese had another 50 pounds of muscle, but fitting the role is more important.

  12. The lead actor in the live action movie Spawn Michael Jai White Would be a perfect fit for the Luke Cage role.

  14. tyrese can act. simple and easy. he will be great.

  15. Not to take anything from Tyrese, but there is someone whose a lot better. There is a movie Tyrese and this guy played in called Babyboy,,,Ving Rhames is his name. If you can rent this movie or better yet catch it on cable. Ving Rhames as Luke Cage the man is big, bad and full of attitude.

  16. Ving Rhames is big, bad and has a heart attack waitin for him durin the second scene. I see what you mean, don’t get me wrong, Ving is great, but the guy is a bit too old for the role. Tyrese is cool, I had my hopes set for Omar Epps, the guy’s big, he can act and you can’t mess with his mean face. Once again, I don’t mind Tyrese, just as long as they can go into this movie and produce it as though it WERE a movie, not some “comic book adaptation” that’ll make us all 5-10 bucks poorer. I’m broke bi#T#ch@s!

  17. batman begins=movie
elektra, ghost rider, (some others but not all)=comic book adaptations
hopefully my last comment wasn’t pulled, otherwise this make don’t sense :)

  18. LL COOL J. PERFECT IN BODY MASS AND IS A BETTER ACTOR.

  19. the perfect actor to potray luke cage is terry crews(everyone hates chris, norbit, ball of fury). best know for playing damon on friday after next. he bigger and definately get a mean mug on. SWEET CHRISTMAS!!

  20. Too pretty. Cage is supposed to be kind of scary. I would have gone for someone like Djimon Hounsou, if he could put on some muscle and a Harlem Accent, that is. Cage is from the ‘hood, right?

    Comment by Komik Fan — June 20, 2007 @ 8:23 pm

  21. Djimon Hounsou = great black panther

    Comment by Morgan — June 21, 2007 @ 1:15 am

  22. Man, good call. Djimon Hounsou should totally play Black Panther. As for Tyrese Gibson as Luke Cage, I don’t think he would be bad. I just think he isn’t the “perfect” choice of actors for the character. Hrm, Terry Crews? Maybe a bit old for the role though.

    Comment by Andrew — June 21, 2007 @ 5:15 am

  23. I would cast Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko on LOST) as Black Panther.

    Comment by JC Baron — June 21, 2007 @ 9:44 am

  24. I hope the part of Cage isn’t set in stone because I would love to see Chad L. Coleman from HBO’s The Wire play Luke. He’s gorgeous and he has the maturity, frame and acting ability needed to play Cage.

  25. So this is still moving forward. Good news. :)

  26. This must be a joke. Tyrese ain´t no actor. Awful would describe it best.

Ok, he´s got a good body. I gotta give him that but what he ain´t got is talent. Can´t act, can´t sing. Nothing.

LL Cool J IS the natural choice for this role. He´s trained to human peak and he can act! he´s proven that he´s as good an actor as he´s a rapper.

On the plus side, Tyrese makes the correction that Luke Cage is ONE of the first Black superheroes. So, he has done his homework unlike Sci-Fi Wire’s reporter.

  28. To Mac Don:

Frankly, I think actor Henry Simmons (NYPD Blue) would be the best pick for Cage. He’s got the youth, build, and acting experience. Little wonder he won the Luke Cage Actor poll in UVC Magazine (April/May Issue).

That said, I know Tinseltown would be VERY tempted to pick Tyrese as Cage if-okay when-Transformers debuts huge on July 3rd. Heck, Tyrese as the lead on Cage could convince a studio to finally pick up the film.
