Female prisoners in Afghanistan - Tomris Atabay, prison reform expert

UNODC has carried out a study among female prisoners in Afghanistan to assess their chances of social reintegration upon release from prison. Tomris Atabay is a prison reform expert and author of the study. She said that there is currently very little post-release support for female prisoners in Afghanistan (duration: 8:56).

Internet crime - Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Independent Expert for the UN Secretary-General's Study on Violence against Children

United Nations Crime Commission - Stuart Gilman, UNODC Anti-Corruption Unit

Crime experts from around the world are meeting this week at UNODC in Vienna to discuss ways to tackle global crime issues. Over 1,000 participants will be attending the 16th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The 40-member UN Commission formulates international policies and recommends activities in the field of crime control. Topics include criminal justice responses to urban crime, combating the sexual exploitation of children, and international cooperation against trafficking in timber and illegal logging. Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking - Alexia Taveau, UNODC Anti-Human Trafficking Unit 

Human trafficking is a global problem. No country is immune, whether as a source, a destination or a transit point for victims of human trafficking. UNODC, together with other United Nations agencies, Governments, and NGOs, has launched a Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. A series of events throughout the world will culminate in Vienna with an International Conference against Human Trafficking in November this year. (Duration: 8:40)

Child trafficking in Vietnam -  Troels Vester, Technical Adviser (Legal/Law Enforcement), UNODC Vietnam

Children from Vietnam are being trafficked to the UK, where they're forced to work in cannabis factories. UNODC is working on projects in Vietnam to prevent human trafficking and is assisting the UK and Vietnamese police authorities in tackling this crime.  (Duration: 8:35)

Afghan Opium Winter Rapid Assessment Survey - Christina Oguz, UNODC Representative in Afghanistan 

According to a newly released survey by UNODC and Afghanistan's Ministry of Counter Narcotics, opium cultivation in Afghanistan could rise again in 2007, following the record levels seen in 2006. However, effective countrywide eradication may alter this trend, and significant decreases are expected in the north of the country, thanks to initiatives aimed at providing farmers and local leaders with incentives to switch to licit livelihoods. HIV in prisons - Mark Shaw, UNODC expert and contributor to the "Framework for an Effective National Response"

HIV/AIDS in prisons is a serious problem all over the world. UNODC has produced a document that gives guidance to governments on how to address this issue. The "Framework for an Effective National Response" suggests ways to prevent HIV transmission within prisons and provide care and treatment for HIV positive inmates - equivalent to that available to people in the community outside of prisons.
