Here's the will of David Packard,
co-founder of Hewlett- Packard. Packard
left the majority of his holdings,
estimated at $7 billion or more, to
the charitable foundation named for
him and his late wife. When the transfer
of assets is completed, The David
and Lucille Packard Foundation may
be the wealthiest charity in the world,
surpassing the Ford Foundation.
I, DAVID PACKARD, declare that this
is my will.
First: I revoke all wills and codicils
that I have previously made.
Second: I am a widower. I have four
(4) children:
DAVID WOODLEY PACKARD, NANCY PACKARD
BURNETT,
SUSAN PACKARD ORR and JULIE PACKARD
STEPHENS.
Third: I nominate as executors ("executor")
of this will those of my children
who are competent and willing to act.
No bond shall be required of the executor
of this will.
Fourth: I give to my issue who survive
me, by right of representation, all
my jewelry, clothing, household furniture
and furnishings, automobiles and other
articles of tangible personal property
not disposed of in any other manner.
Fifth: I give the residue of my
estate to THE DAVID AND LUCILE PACKARD
FOUNDATION; provided, however, if
at the time of my death said foundation
is not then in existence or is not
then described in section 2055 of
the Internal Revenue Code of 1986,
as amended, then I give the residue
of my estate instead to such one or
more organizations then described
in said sections and in such proportions
as my executor in my executor's absolute
and uncontrolled discretion may select.
Sixth: A. I authorize (but do not
require) my executor:
1. To sell, with or without notice,
at either public or private sale,
and to encumber or lease any property
belonging to my estate, subject only
to such confirmation of court as may
be required by law.
2. To invest and reinvent estate
property in such common or preferred
stocks, shares of investment trusts,
investment companies, bonds, debentures,
mortgages, deeds of trust, notes,
real estate or other property as to
my executor may seem proper, subject
only to such authorization of court
as may be required by law.
I subscribe my name to this will
this 20th day of August, 1987, at
Los Altos Hills.
