What Manhattan Lady Is A Notorious Vaginablocker?

Because "something you complained to your husband about" is now considered interchangeable with "something Arianna Huffington will pay you to write on the internet," Tatiana Boncompagni wrote a column today about someone who "vaginablocked" her access to a VIP at a recent bash, which we're thinking was Kate White's recent book ladylunch at Michael's. more »

Jessica Joffe Now A Target Of The Paparazzi

While cruising the wires today, we noticed that Jessica Joffe—beloved of Ryan Adams, Banana Republic model, former Observer assistant and secret genius—now rates on-the-street paparazzi shots. Not seen: her Anya Hindmarch bag. Also, she is clearly thinking about German philosophy or about unicorns or maybe both. Oh honey. Photo: Bauer Griffin.

Fabiola Beracasa Is A Breathless And Important Whirlwind

As rich-people chronicler Robert Frank points out, being a socialite is now a full-time job. So much to do, so many places to be, so many kisses to air. Take, for example, Fabiola Beracasa. She's up at the ungodly hour of 7:30, and not a scant fifteen minutes later she's out running with her trainer. And then the real work begins. But how does she unwind? more »

'The Manny' Author Is Fooling No One But Herself

Holly Peterson, a socialite with a billionaire father, has just published a book called The Manny, for which she received a $1 million two-book deal. She explains its appeal to the Times like so: "I have a unique perch from which to write about this world. I've got a big fat toe in it. Most people in this world don't write about it and most journalists don't see it." Almost nothing about this statement is true—even, probably, the part about Holly's fat toe. more »

Tinsley Mortimer Is Slipping

Once upon a time a few months ago, huge-in-Japan socialite-symbol Tinsley Mortimer represented everything glittery and perfect about New York's caste-conscious charity circuit. Last night at P. Diddy's CFDA after party at Marquee, she spent time with a person called Aubrey from something called Danity Kane and sported the streakiest fake tan we have ever seen, in addition to a decidedly pie-eyed facial expression. Olivia Palermo, your path seems to have cleared.

Richard Serra's MoMA Dinner

On June 3, a retrospective of 40 years of sculptor Richard Serra's work opens at MoMA. But first, he will be feted in traditional New York socialite-art-world style, with a fancy dinner at the home at Jo Carole Lauder (mom of Aerin, wife of Ronald, daughter-in-law of Estee!) next Tuesday, the 29th. Let's take a look at the guest list and menu! more »

Park Avenue Peerage Phenom Told All Because Reporter "Sounded Ethical"

Some people aren't too happy about how they were portrayed in Isaiah Wilner's New York cover story about socialites and the websites that stalk them, but the Park Avenue Peerage mastermind, 18-year-old James Kurisunkal, is not one of them.
Why did I even come out? The writer of the New York piece, Isaiah Wilner, called me and we talked for hours, off the record. Isaiah sounded ethical and his reasons were equally pure: his piece was one that needed writing—a piece that would help clean up the sliming of innocent people. I felt obligated to act.
Far be it from us to question our hero's judgment, but we're a little leery of his characterization of Isaiah's "pure" motives. Almost as leery as we are of his assertion that his website "isn't a place to post accusations to destroy reputations." So it's just a place for pretty party pix? Screw that! more »

New York's Champ Social Analyst Is Illinois Teen!

Sure, Olivia Palermo is on the cover of New York magazine. But Isaiah Wilner's hotly anticipated article isn't really about her at all. Nor is it really about Valentine and Olga Rei, the Russian stepsiblings who have finally officially outed themselves as the creators of now-defunct website Socialite Rank, which "wiped out what little dignity New York society had left." (Hilarious!) It's especially not about Lydia Hearst, who had complained to Socialite Rank that she'd been told the article would be about "my career as a model and entrepreneur and success and my handbag"—she is mentioned in the article only as a "nonstop e-mailer" of the site. And it's not about Tinsley Mortimer, and it's not about Fabiola Beracasa. It's not even about unearthing the truth about Olivia's shameful, and possibly fake, letter ("there are four basic theories") to fellow socials, or whether or not Tinsley really elbowed her at that charity fashion show ("the alleged incident"). Turns out, it's all about the mastermind behind Park Avenue Peerage, Socialite Rank's successor-site. He's a University of Illinois freshman named James Kurisunkal. "I live in Urbana, near a farm... I'm like—I'm not even white!" It gets better. more »

    Socialite Rank Is Dead

The bizarre art project that was bitchy internet slambook Socialite Rank is now suddenly shuttered forever, leaving us alone with only a scant handful of sad Lalibertian doppelganger sites like ParkAvenuePeerage to comfort us. There is some consolation, though! Socialite Rank has left us with one last Engrish (more likely Engrussian) missive to treasure forever. Let's try to figure out what they're meaning! For starters: "The meaning was to create a book that would definitively showcase the inner workings of New York's 10021 world." more »

    isaiah wilner

Is Socialite Reporter Isaiah Wilner Dumb, Or Dumb Like A Fox?

Model-heiress Lydia Hearst seems slightly peeved that the controversial New York magazine article Isaiah Wilner's working on won't actually be, as promised, all about her: "They contacted my managers and set up an interview saying it was supposed to be about my career as a model and entrepreneur and success and my handbag, and then when I sat down they said the whole story was about Olivia and that's it. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just interesting that a story would be pitched so inaccurately," she sniped to Socialite Rank. As discussed, she's not the only social-lady who has a bone to pick with Isaiah. What's up with this guy, anyway? Is he just sensibly refining his angle from the general to the specific as he works on his socialite story—hey, like Lydia said, nothing wrong with that!—or is he preying on these girls' gullibility unfairly? Does he have a history of ethically questionable behavior? Let's turn back the clock to the heady late 90s.... more »

Prodigy Author To Incur Socialite Wrath

Isaiah Wilner, the twentysomething Yalie who published a book about the "media scandals" surrounding Time's founders last year, may be kicking up a bit of a scandal of his own. According to a recent Page Six item, Wilner's working on an article about hot-topic social gal Olivia Palermo for New York magazine. Per Page Six, Olivia fears that she might end up regretting having spoken to Wilner without her new publicist Kelly Cutrone present. But judging from Palermo's brief but storied history of mindfuckery, that item might be a ruse—the same kind of attempt to drum up sympathy as that famous groveling letter to her fellow socialites. more »

    Social Problems: Tinsley V. Olivia

You know that sensation you get when you can see the outlines of a PR ploy but you can't quite tell the furniture from the wallpaper yet? Well, something's up in the social land of Tinsley Mortimer and Olivia Palermo, and we're not sure if the wee socialites are in collusion, feud, or what. There's today's Gatecrasher, where Tinsley allegedly hockey-checked Olivia on the runway at some horrible Scottish fashion show on Monday—an incident unnoticed by other attendees. Now that Olivia is being represented by serious toughie Kelly Cutrone, she's at the highest she's ever ranked on the new Socialite Rank ratings—though they do stop and drop for a dig from an emailer: "Olivia looked stunning, but no one really knew who she was. She barely received any applause. Tinsley really worked it and it showed." Hmm. Cui bono, we ask? If anyone can fill us in on the story behind the stories, we'd appreciate it. more »

The Tinz Can't Help Embarrassing Her In-Laws

This much more obsessive Socialite Rank-esque site, Park Avenue Peerage, went to great lengths to explain the Mortimer (as in Topper, husband to Tinsley) family tree today. We mostly knew that he's related to Brooke Shields, New York City Planning Commission chair Amanda Burden, Babe Paley, and a Buddhist monk in Connecticut. But he's also related to some verrrrry WASP-y looking people who don't seem exactly thrilled that he's brought the insanely camera-friendly Tinz into their exclusive G&T-swilling; orbit. more »

Before They Were Sorta Famous: Socialite Olivia Palermo

olivia palermo smells like tunaPoor Olivia Palermo! One minute Socialite Rank is calling her "one of most fascinating [sic] young and up-and-coming NY personalities," and then today they're all, "she's been attending too many events, borrowing too many dresses, allegedly skipping too many of her college sessions while peaking too soon and making too many (jealous?) enemies" while subtly implying that she is like a package of tuna. We thought we'd do our part to cheer Libs up on this sad backlashey day! Here's a cute yearbook picture of her from Connecticut prep school, St. Luke's. more »

    Gillian Hearst-Shaw Is Nepotastic!

What do you do when your sister got all the model-pretty genes and your 'socialite' reality show never got produced? Well, if you're Gillian Hearst-Shaw, you go into the family business. According to WWD, the socialite has been "quietly working" as an editorial assistant at Town & Country's semiannual wedding and quarterly travel magazines—her family has an ownership stake in, natch—since early January. "Not only do I get to learn and work, I also get to learn and work at a family company," Hearst-Shaw cooed to WWD. But will her assistanting duties get in the way of her wedding plans? (Hearst was given a "blindingly huge diamond engagement ring" last weekend in the Berkshires by her lawyer boyfriend Christian Simonds). We hope not! She tells WWD that charges of nepotism just make her want to "work that much harder" to prove that she deserves her job. You go, girl!

Derek Blasberg Pretends He Isn't BFF With The Tinz

Oh, Derek Blasberg. When you rip off a story about socialites with businesses from the NYT for your column in the London Times, could you at least have the dignity to acknowledge that you're pretty much best friends with all of the people you're writing about? Like, when you're writing about how Tinsley Mortimer will only be interviewed via e-mail ("like other celebrities, she is reluctant to be interviewed be face to face"), we might believe you if you weren't photographed all the time with her.
