The office of "Captain General" was a rather peculiar appointment since it fell in between what could be termed the highest rank in the army, similar to the later rank of Field Marshal, and the office of Commander-in-Chief. In many ways it was really another term for Commander-in-Chief, although the dates of appointment to each often differed. There were Captains-General of the British Army, Captains-General of individual expeditions or regions, Captains-General of particular corps and Captains-General for individual colonies. Indeed, with several older colonies, such as Jamaica or Sierra Leone, as late as the 1940's it formed part of the Governors title. While other Governors were styled "Governor and Commander-in-Chief" these were styled "Captain-General, Vice-Admiral and Governor-in-Chief".
While the appointment of Captain-General was for a period of command, the later creation of the rank of Field Marshal was a lifetime appointment. (See also the general introduction to Field Marshals.)
