Oslo is the capital of Norway. It has a population of approximately 500,000. The history of speed skating in Oslo goes back to the 1850s when the fjord was used for skating. In the first years Vippetangen, outside Akershus Castle was used, but in the late 1870s speed skating was moved to Frognerkilen, between Skarpsno on the mainland and Oscarshall on Bygdøy. In 1885, the Norwegian speed skating champion Axel Paulsen met the Dutch champion Arie van der Zee to a prestigious race at Frognerkilen. There was an enormous interest for this race, and the whole city came to see Paulsen. The newspaper Morgenbladet issued the first special edition in Norwegian sports history. The race was over 3 english miles on a 1400 m track, and Paulsen won easily.

When the first international championships held in Oslo, the 1900 World Championships, it was held at Frognerkilen, but from 1901 the new stadium at Frogner was used.
