Vital records (data on births, marriages and deaths) and the records of censuses are kept in different types of archives in Russia: For periods before about 1790, these records can be found at the Moscow-based Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts. For periods roughly falling between 1790 and 1920, the records are kept at regional state archives. Russia has 89 territorial units (with different names such as respublika, oblast, krai, etc.). Each mainrains a separate regional state archive. After 1920, archives of regional ZAGS ( local registration bureaus) are the place to search. These archives provide information free of charge, but to direct descendants only. Personal record files exist also at specific regional and federal archives of the defunct Communist Party, Ministry of Defense, various ministries and other governmental institutions. |
