Research & Family History
Research Centre
Disruptions to the availability of Research Centre collections in 2007:
In conjunction with the redevelopment of the Memorial's Post-1945 Conflicts galleries there will be construction work taking place in the Research Centre's repository and reading room. This will lead to limited or delayed access. Please see Redevelopment News for more information.
Prospective researchers are advised to contact the Research Centre at least two weeks prior to visiting.
The Research Centre is the single most important resource for researching Australia's military history. The Centre's varied activities and resources are described here to assist researchers, students, and prospective visitors:
- Information sheets
- Chronological Guide to Official Records
- Finding aids to selected private records and ephemera collections
- Select and annotated reading lists
- Copying services
ReQuest
This is an online reference service. You can search the knowledge base for frequently asked questions (FAQs) or complete and submit a reference form online. Your inquiry will be responded to within three to ten working days.
Family history
The Memorial contains a wealth of material relating to individual servicemen and women – but where do you start? Find out how to obtain personal service records, locate items in our collections, search biographical databases, such as the Roll of Honour, Commemorative Roll, and various Nominal Rolls, and where else to go for information.
Encyclopedia
The Memorial receives many public inquiries covering a wide range of topics. The Encyclopedia provides answers to these frequently asked questions about Australians at war. It allows you to search the Memorial's databases and provides links to other useful resources.
Australia–Japan Research Project
The Australia–Japan Research Project (AJRP) provides a broad range of resources to guide researchers in the relationship between Australia and Japan, especially during the Second World War. This includes databases of primary and secondary source materials, essays and seminar paper, translations of Japanese accounts, and other special features that trace the personal experience of war from the perspective of both sides.
Journal of the Australian War Memorial
The Journal of the Australian War Memorial is an occasional publication, advancing the Memorial's mission of remembering and interpreting the Australian experience of war and publicising research into Australian military history. From No. 28 (April 1996) the journal has been published on the website only.
Wartime
Wartime is the Memorial's official quarterly magazine. It is devoted to the Australian experience of war, military history, and the effects of war on society. Each issue delivers the stories of courage and survival of both service personnel and civilians.
Military History Section
Staff biographies of the Memorial's Military History Section.
Grants and scholarships
The Australian War Memorial Act 1980 requires the Memorial to "conduct, arrange and assist in research into matters pertaining to Australian military history". The Memorial fulfils this function, in part, through the Research Grants Scheme and Summer Vacation Scholarships.
