"Ken, I love listening to the sports broadcast sounds on your website. Living in Houston, and being big Texan and Astro fan, I wonder if I have time to care that there is now a pro soccer team here. So as a soccer announcer, tell me why it will be worth my while to get into soccer. Thanks. --- Brent K.

Brent:

Thanks for taking the time to write.

Soccer is a simple game for clever people, so they say.

Personally, I love the beauty and grace of it (it is "The Beautiful Game"). It's amazing what a really talented player can do with the ball. But it's also physical and intense and very much a game of pride and honor and joy and team spirit, as the recent Eric Cantona Nike ads say.

It is low-scoring, and sometimes a really nice play won't result in a score, so you just have to know that going in. There can be really good 0-0 games and really poorly-played 3-2 games, so the sheer number of goals isn't necessarily indicative of the quality of play.

In Houston, you've got a good team with some exciting players (like Brian Ching) that plays games in an intimate atmosphere (at Robertson - believe me, much better than Soldier Field or Arrowhead Stadium or some of the other NFL stadiums in which the game has been played in this country traditionally. If there's a nice night upcoming (from what I remember of Houston, it gets pretty hot there) with a home game, you should just go and try it. I think you'll be impressed by the passion of the fans, the skill of the players and some of the physical play.

If you don't know the rules, it's not a huge deal, but if you know somebody who does know the game and if they'll go with you, they can explain some of the finer points, but basically if you know offside, cards, free kicks and what goes on in the penalty area, you'll be fine.

I understand that not everybody enjoys soccer - I fell in love with it when I was about 13. I hope you'll at least give it a chance. Let me know what happens.

Thanks again for writing.

No idea, sorry. I see things from time to time on eBay, but I don't think a lot of that stuff survived.

Good luck!
