Annotated Battlefield 1942 Maps

This is my annotated collection of Battlefield 1942 Conquest multiplayer maps. Vehicle and flag locations (but not ammo or medical supplies) are often different for Coop, CTF, TDM, and single player games.

The maps show the initial positions of vehicles, planes, and ships, as well as strongholds, static weapons, and medical and ammunition resupply points. The table includes the complement of aircraft that comes with each carrier. Emplaced artillery, landing craft, and level bombers are part of the Road To Rome expansion. You might also find useful a list of all vehicles that "1shot1kill" made for all the original maps.

The "full detail" maps are at a high resolution and show extra details such as spawn points, repair pads, and airplane ammo. See the Map Legend section for what's what. Icons are made semitransparent so that you can see when icons are on top of each other. Note that in Internet Explorer you have to hover your mouse over the image: eventually an icon with four arrows will appear in the lower right corner - click it and you are shown the full resolution image. If you'd like to turn off this feature entirely (it's idiotic): go to Internet Explorer's Tools menu, select "Internet Options...", select the "Advanced" tab on the upper right, scroll to the "Multimedia" section, uncheck the box "Enable Automatic Image Resizing", and hit "OK".

These full detail maps are generated by my makemap perl script. Be warned that these maps are not entirely reliable. For example, on Bocage there is an ammo box marked near the barn in C5, but you'll never find it (I believe it's buried well under the surface level, a goof on DICE's part).

I've tried to map total conversion equipment to their BF 1942 counterparts, e.g. SCUDs are artillery, helicopters get listed as bombers or other aircraft, etc. Someday when I have too much time I'll make up new icons and put them in.

The notation "2+2" (or "1+2") for planes means that originally there are two planes available, and when one is flown off the spawn point will generate another plane eventually. This second (or even third) spawn happens even though the first plane has not been destroyed. See the individual map for where these spawns occur. For the Battle of Britain, the "12+4" notation for flak means 12 flak guns and 4 radar, each of which has a flak gun. For Secret Weapons or other expansion maps, this type of notation usually means "additional weird weapons more or less like this class."

Mapping notes: For crowded bases, the conquest point is in the correct spot and icons are placed relative to it (though sometimes medical and ammo supplies will get crowded out to the fringes). If an ammunition and medical resupply point border one another on the map, that usually means they're in the same building; these are almost always on the ground level (exceptions: the windmill on Bocage has ammo on the top floor, one building in Berlin has ammo and medical upstairs, and in Stalingrad and Kharkov some ammo supplies are on the second floor of burnt out buildings). Medical supply lockers are always inside buildings; medical boxes can be inside or out. Vehicles repair points are not shown; these are in hangars and on grates, and these repair and resupply all vehicles in them. Being a passenger (i.e., not driving or shooting) in a halftrack gives you medical and ammo supplies; friendly vehicles can also resupply from halftracks by driving next to them. Airfields are ammunition resupply areas for planes, e.g., if you fly very low over (only) your own airfield you pick up ammunition.

Initial vehicles and emplacements on ships are as follows:

All surface ships have an ammo supply point in the middle and two landing boats near the rear or middle.

Mod Maps

See the Map Legend section for approximately what's what. You'll have to exactly figure out how the various icons exactly correlate for a total mod.

Desert Combat

Here are the new maps for DC:
Al Khafji Docks
Basrah Nights
Basrahs Edge
Battle of 73 Easting
Desert Shield
Lost Village
Medina Ridge
No Fly Zone
DC No Fly Zone Day 2
Oil Fields
Weapon Bunkers
Inshallah Valley

Eve of Destruction

These are the new maps for Eve of Destruction. They were made by the automatic mapping tool, so don't expect perfection. Anyway, they're better than a kick in the head.

Note that in Internet Explorer you have to move your mouse over the image, staying inside its bounds: eventually an icon with four arrows will appear in the lower right corner - click it and you are shown the full resolution image. Annoying "feature".

Galactic Conquest

There's currently one map for this mod: Hoth (thanks to Prodigy for making this map)

Various Maps

Various new maps for BF 1942.

I'll repeat this once again, just in case: note that in Internet Explorer you have to move your mouse over the image, staying inside its bounds: eventually an icon with four arrows will appear in the lower right corner - click it and you are shown the full resolution image. Annoying "feature".

Technical Details

I personally like using the free IrfanView to print full-page versions of these maps. Save the GIF file (right click on it), view it with IrfanView, and print from there.

Please let me know of any missing or incorrect data (especially ammo and medical supply points, which don't show up on the overhead map).

There are some excellent high-resolution maps (without annotation) at the BF42 web site. This site also shows the names of the control points (just click on the "Description" links), handy when using the F4 radio control. The vehicle list also gives location names.

Technical details: to get the original map, I used the RFA Extractor to extract the Textures/InGameMap.dds file from the C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Archives\bf1942\levels\*.rfa game data file. I then used SlowView to read this DDS format image and convert it to something more common, such as Targa. I then used Paint Shop Pro to add the legend and the icons. To actually find the locations of objects, I first walked around a lot. Then I wrote this Perl script: makemap.pl. It extracts the locations of all objects on a map. It also now makes the maps automatically. The only downside is that it does not resolve overlapping icons, i.e. if more than one thing is in the same location, you'll see the last icon drawn, blended a bit with the underlying icon. There is a fuller description of what the tool does on my tools page.
