Giant Grid O' Death

This page has been updated to the patch version 1.4 damage values. Quick summary of differences from v1.31: First off, I believe DICE goofed and never hooked up their new BayonetProjectile in Common/Weapons.con to get used by the K98 or No.4, and they never added an "attGroup 257" anywhere in the bf1942/Game/damage_system directory, so bayonet damage has not changed. The sniper rifle now reloads as fast as the engineer's rifle did in 1.31, i.e. it now reloads in 1.6 seconds instead of 3 seconds. Machineguns are indeed less potent against planes, but not terribly so: hitting in the engine causes 12.5% less damage, hitting the wings causes 25% less damage, hitting the tail causes 10% less damage. The minor inconsistency that the K98 could damage jeeps and the No.4 could not has been corrected; now both can. Flak's damage values have not changed, but its DamageType has been changed to "4", whatever that means (from experimenting, it appears this makes near misses more effective; perhaps there's no damage fall-off with distance). You'll see the new DP 1928 Russian assault rifle as material 256 on the chart. Summary: 9 rounds a second (vs. BAR's 8), 3.6 second reload time (vs. BAR's 4.0), less zoom-in than the BAR, and otherwise it has exactly the same firing characteristics (deviation is the same) as a BAR. The new Type 99 Japanese assault rifle is like a BAR in many ways. However, like a medic's gun, its damage starts to drop off at 50 meters, going to a minimum of half damage above 100 meters. To compensate, it has somewhat less deviation when aiming and when moving. It also has a little less zoom-in than the BAR.

Notes: tanks are shown as having splash damage, but tank splash does not actually seem to damage anything, as their damage radius never gets defined (or maybe the default is very small). Such mostly-irrelevant attacks are shown in parentheses. That said, tank and A-T shells against concrete walls cause rock fragments to fly off, which cause damage. Also, for weapons with splash, look at the defense material list at the very bottom of this page - it appears that this material is used as the defense when doing splash damage; ignore the location-specific material.

Your mileage may vary. What is listed here is the maximum damage for a weapon. Splash damage drops off with the distance from impact (see the explanation of radius). Weapons such as the Breda, medics' guns, and pistols drop off with range (see the MinDamage page). Also, the angle at which a shot hits an armored surface matters: dead on gives full damage, a glancing angle does less (it's the cosine of the angle compared to the surface normal).

For a massaged (but not entirely updated, and incomplete) version of this data, see my Weapon Damage page. For more on the technical aspects on how the damage system works, see the Damage System page on the modder's wiki.

Weapon Material IDs

These are derived from the various weapons files. The italicized names are the weapons that use the projectiles. They're displayed so you can find things like the Breda, which uses BAR bullets. Some names should not be taken too seriously, like the bayonets are actually knives but are associated with guns. For bayonets, instead look for the names ending with StabArm (which are all Material 210). Note that the v1.4 patch was supposed to make bayonets use material 257, but DICE never hooked it up.

Direct Hit Defense Material IDs

These are derived from opening up the collision meshes of objects and looking at the materials assigned to the various faces. This is an ongoing process searching these out, so don't trust all these values.

Direct Hit Defense Material IDs

Every vehicle is made of one or more materials. For weapons which can hit various parts of the vehicle, e.g. a gunshot hitting a part of a plane, the vehicle's collision mesh (which is a part of the .sm meshes in the StandardMesh.rfa) has various materials defined on it. You read these into 3DS MAX with Rexman's collision mesh importer, select a polygon, and can view the material ID in the Modify system. Subtract 1 from the value seen in 3DS MAX and you get the material ID that BF 1942 uses (e.g. 3DS MAX's "51" is BF1942's "50"). Generally a higher number in a class (e.g. 53 vs. 51 in "Armor") is better. Related to this, every soldiers have the same three materials: 40 for the head, 41 for the trunk, and 42 for the limbs. For splash damage (including depth charges), each object has a material defined by ObjectTemplate.Material in its Objects.con file. There are only 5 materials used: 45 is for jeeps, artillery, APCs, and flak guns, 50 is for tanks, 55 is for ships, 57 is for subs, and 60 is for planes.

Note: the Hatsuzuki has a material of 86 for its guns; sounds like a goof, and it basically just makes these something that cannot be hit (though the turret can be hit).

Vehicle Splash Defense Material IDs (?)

These are set by ObjectTemplate.Material in the various vehicle Objects.con files, but are not for direct (non-splash) damage. I am guessing that these materials are used for computing splash damage effects.
