Cyber Bullies

Posted by Daniel Sieberg

A new survey released today by Teenage Research Unlimited finds an alarming number of teens in dating relationships are being harrassed through technology. Threatening text messages, cell phone calls or abusive Web sites or e-mail. There’s also a disturbing connection between bullying and technology with so-called cyberbullying among kids. Many parents may not even be aware of these teenage tactics, and our piece about this important subject will be airing tonight on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.  Read more

Microsoft's New Vista

Posted by Daniel Sieberg

(AP)
Call me crazy, but I just don’t get too excited over new computer operating systems, whether -for Macs or PCs or Commodores. (OK, that last one was a joke but some days I actually miss the simplicity of my Commodore Vic 20.) That said, Tuesday marks a milestone. After some delays, Microsoft is rolling out its latest OS offering with Windows Vista.  Read more

Seeing In Tongue

Posted by Daniel Sieberg

(CBS)
While gathering a story in the past week, I really couldn’t believe my eyes. And it was for two reasons: One, it’s about a fascinating technology. Two, it made me re-examine how we all perceive the world around us. Or at least we sighted people.

You see, the story is about an experimental technology/device that basically allows blind people to “see” certain images.

Missing Kids & The Web

(AP Photo/Tom Gannam)
The Internet has long played a role in helping find missing children; organizing support, getting tips, discovering someone’s chat history. And by now we’ve all heard the warnings when it comes to children falling victim to online predators. But in my experience it’s rare to discover that a missing child may have had a presence on the Internet – while he was missing.  Read more

Off To Consumer Electronics Show

I’m off to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) tomorrow and madly trying to corral some cool products to show you on Monday morning’s Early Show. It takes place in Las Vegas from Jan. 8-11, and this year marks the 40th anniversary. But you won’t find many people waxing nostalgic for 8-track cassettes or VCRs. This massive gathering showcases the future of what we’ll all see on store shelves in the coming months and years.

Stay tuned for my interview with Bill Gates ...  Read more

CYBER SIEBERG

(CBS)
I was tempted to open this blog with a clever quote about technology or about introductions in general, maybe something from Einstein or Wilde or Marconi, but then I thought the best way to introduce myself is simply to say, “Hey there, fellow tech talker.”

I’m the new science and technology correspondent at CBS News, and I’d like this blog to be a transparent dialogue of ideas and opinions. I’ve spent the last 15 years covering science and technology in some form, working for places like The Vancouver Sun, CTV, and CNN. For more you can just click here. But in all my years of being plugged into the digital world I’ve never maintained a blog, so I hope I can do justice to this one.  Read more
