New York
(CBS) QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance.”
- William Shakespeare

DID YOU KNOW?
The first known heart medicine was discovered in an English garden. In 1799, physician John Ferriar noted the effect of dried leaves of the common foxglove plant, digitalis purpurea, on heart action. Still used in heart medications, digitalis slows the pulse and increases the force of heart contractions and the amount of blood pumped per heartbeat.

SATURDAY ON 48 HOURS MYSTERY 9PM/8C

Here's a note from Maureen Maher on Saturday's 48 Hours Mystery, Murder Comes Knocking:

"This week's show is all about young love... and what happens when it goes wrong. Jarrod Davidson and Kelee Jones met at college and fell in love... Kelee soon got pregnant - and wanting to do the right thing, Jarrod married his sweetheart. Only their romance was short lived, and their life together was anything but a bed of roses.

Shortly after they were married and Kelee gave birth to a beautiful little girl - the couple divorced - and there began a long and ugly custody battle. A custody battle where both Kelee and Jarrod involved their families - and the authorities.

Then, just several weeks before the next major round in court - Jarrod, was ambushed, gunned down and murdered in front of his own home. Many neighbors were too afraid to look out the window, but they heard the young college teacher yelling, "Help, they've killed me!!!" Investigators immediately suspected Kelee - - but there were other people, who had their own motives... and clearly by the words of the victim himself, there was more than one person involved!

How does a young romance and the birth of a child turn to such a tragedy - - this week, 48 Hours investigates what some people are willing to do for love, and for the notion of taking what they think is theirs... a sense of entitlement at any cost.

We found this case fascinating because it really proved to us, just when you think you have all the answers, just when you think you know who did it - - and why - - a single piece of evidence can turn the entire story around.

Not only was this story about the future of this young family, particularly the little girl Kelee gave birth to, but it was also very much about the past. And as is often the case - - the one bullet that killed Jarrod Davidson sent out painful repercussions to dozens of others who knew him, who knew Kelee, who know that little girl. My heart truly went out to Jarrod's parents - who are as innocent as their little grand daughter, but who are also paying a very dear price for the sins of others. We hope you'll tune in this weekend to 48 Hours... and pop us an e-mail after the show, let us know what you think."

- Maureen Maher

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here is an early preview of what we are planning for tonight’s CBS EVENING NEWS from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric…

Hi, everyone,

I hope you've had a good week.

A long-awaited report by the Pentagon's acting inspector general undercuts the intelligence community in the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in early 2003.

Acting Inspector General Thomas F. Gimble told a key Senate committee today that the office headed by former Pentagon policy chief Douglas J. Feith took "inappropriate" actions in advancing conclusions on al-Qaeda connections not backed up by the nation's intelligence agencies. Gimble said these actions "did not provide the most accurate analysis of intelligence to senior decision makers" as the country was moving toward war with Iraq. David Martin will have the latest details.

The FBI is tracking a potentially dangerous new threat. Bob Orr is on the case, and will have this exclusive report.

Sen. Barack Obama's historic bid for the White House starts tomorrow in Springfield, Ill., where he will officially announce his run for president. Tonight, we'll bring you portions of an exclusive interview the Illinois Democrat gave to 60 Minutes. The interview will air in full on Sunday night. Also, Gloria Borger will report on how the Democratic race for president is shaping up.

There was also an unexpected new twist in the paternity suit involving Anna Nicole Smith's infant daughter. Prince Frederick von Anhalt, the husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, said he had a decade-long affair with Smith and may be her baby's father. Two other men are also contesting the paternity of 5-month-old Dannielynn, and experts say the custody decision could determine the child's inheritance now that Smith has died. Kelly Cobiella will report on the legal web that's developing, and the latest news from the medical examiner.

We'll also take a look at your finances. Since traditional banks may require you to have significant collateral just to get in the door, some startups are filling a need for a new type of money exchange. Anthony Mason will report on one online company that links small lenders and borrowers, and helps people caught in a credit gap.

Finally, in this week's Assignment America, Steve Hartman has a heartwarming story about some special kids who are especially passionate about skiing. On the slopes, these children feel no limits at all. Also, don't forget — if you have a story you think would make a captivating Assignment America report, e-mail us at assignment@cbsnews.com.

We'll have these stories — and more — tonight. I hope you have a good weekend.

Thanks!

Katie

HERE'S WHAT WE HAVE PLANNED FOR SUNDAY MORNING

CHARLES OSGOOD ANCHORS FROM NEW YORK.

IDOL WORSHIP: The Grammy Awards are Sunday night, honoring the best in music. And among the paths to Grammy success, you can now add American Idol. Last year, Idol winner Kelly Clarkson took home two Grammys. This year, Carrie Underwood has several nominations. American Idol winners and runners-up are all over the pop charts. Sandra Hughes will talk with Idol judge Randy Jackson about the phenomenon, and catches up on tour with Chris Daughtry, one of the latest Idol success stories. We'll also consider whether Idol is creating stars who will stand the test of time, and look at how it all fits into an industry buffeted by change.

WHO'S THE BOSS? ZAC POSEN: The Zac Posen show was about more than clothes. It was THE place to see and be seen during New York's Fashion Week. A fitting tribute to the 26-year-old designer known for creating red carpet dresses for the likes of Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. This Sunday Morning, Rita Braver will show us what following Zac Posen on and off the runway was like as he prepared for this past week's show.

VALENTINE'S DAY ROSES: Those beautiful Valentine’s roses may look as romantic and sentimental as an old-fashioned garden. But today, the cut flower industry bears no resemblance whatsoever to that garden you may remember. It's a huge, high-tech, outsourced global industry. And as correspondent Martha Teichner will report, it's an industry where fragrance has bred out of roses.

TAKES THE CAKE!: Sylvia Weinstock is called the "Leonardo da Vinci" of wedding cakes and with good reason. Her wedding cakes are stunning, delicious, unique and VERY expensive. Serena Altschul will have her story.
