Czech Republic

Date of admission to UN: 19 January 1993.

Treaties: Ratifications and Reservations

Land and People: The Czech Republic submitted a revised core document for use by the treaty bodies (HRI/CORE/1/Add.71/Rev.2, 18 July 2003) which provides demographic and statistical data as well as information on the general political structure and the general legal framework within which human rights protected. The report notes, inter alia: constitutional provisions; the independence of the judiciary; the jurisdiction of the Constitutional Court; the office of the Prosecuting Attorney; provisions in the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms; the status of international human rights treaties in domestic law; national authorities with powers related to the protection of human rights – the Constitutional Court and other courts, the Office of the Ombudsman; the Council of the Government of the Czech Republic for human rights, an advisory body of the government on issues concerning the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in such areas as racism, education, civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, equal opportunities for women and men, torture; the Government Council for National Minorities; the Government Committee for persons with disabilities; institutions facilitating public information – e.g. the UN Information Centre in Prague; the European Information Centre, operating within Charles University; the web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Office of the Cabinet.

Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

The Czech Republic's fifth periodic report (CERD/C/419/Add.1) was considered by the Committee at its August 2003 session; the sixth and seventh periodic reports are due 1 January 2006.

Discrimination against Women

Succeeded: 22 February 1993.

The Czech Republic's third periodic report was due 24 March 2002; the fourth periodic report is due 24 March 2005.

Optional Protocol: Signed: 10 December 1999; ratified: 26 February 2001.

Torture

Succeeded: 22 February 1993.

The Czech Republic's third periodic report has been submitted (CAT/C/60/Add.1) but is not yet scheduled for consideration; the fourth periodic report is due 31 December 2005.

Rights of the Child

Succeeded: 22 February 1993.

The Czech Republic's second periodic report (CRC/C/83/Add.4) was considered by the Committee at its January 2003 session; the third periodic report is due 31 December 2005.

Optional Protocol (Armed conflict): Signed: 6 September 2000; ratified: 30 November 2001.
