What cities take interns? New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. Participants are responsible for living arrangements and expenses.
How many positions are available? Fall and spring take 40 students and summer takes 80. These numbers are approximate and can vary. Each student is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Does the student choose which department he/she wants to work in? No. Placement is at the sole discretion of the Coordinator.
What is the time commitment? The internship requires a commitment of two full weekdays during the fall and spring. The summer program is full time over the course of 10 weeks. Hours are typically 10-6, but can vary depending on the department.
What are the duties? Duties can include logging tapes, coordinating scripts, research, preliminary interviews, assisting during shoots, selecting footage, viewer mail, and clerical duties.
Who is eligible? Juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending an accredited college are eligible. A variety of majors qualify including Journalism, Broadcasting, Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising, English, International Studies, Political Science and more. Participants must have good computer skills, excellent written and oral communication abilities, knowledge of current events, and a 3.0 GPA.
Is this a paid internship? No.
Am I guaranteed a job if I intern? No. Participation in the internship program is not a guarantee of future employment.
When are students notified about the position? The office reviews all submitted applications and contacts qualified candidates for a phone interview. We do not respond to application status inquiries.
What are the deadlines? Fall/Spring: rolling

What paperwork needs to be submitted to apply? CBS must receive written confirmation from your college stating that you will get credit for the internship. All students are required to get college credit. Applications materials must be mailed together. Evening News: (NY & DC) This broadcast covers news reports, features and interviews by
CBS News correspondents covering events throughout the world. Intern must have strong research and computer skills and knowledge of Lexis-Nexis. Ability to work the phone with contacts and sources, affiliate calls and light clerical work.
60 Minutes: (NY & DC)
CBS News magazine with features and investigative reports focusing on people and events in the news and behind the headlines. Intern must have strong research skills with knowledge in computers and Lexis-Nexis a must.
48 Hours: (NY) A
CBS News magazine that goes behind the headlines to investigate – with cutting-edge style and journalistic integrity – baffling crimes, heartless scams and compelling real-life dramas. Intern must be organized, efficient with their time and aggressive. Computer skills and proficiency with Lexis-Nexis required. Strong interpersonal skills recommended.
The Early Show (NY & DC) A hard-news broadcast with breaking news reports and regular feature segments that cover business and personal finance, consumer affairs, entertainment, home improvement, lifestyle and health. Intern must be organized and have strong interpersonal skills. Computer skills helpful.
The Early Show—Audience Recruiting: (NY) This unit is responsible for recruiting audience members for
The Early Show's live plaza segments. Intern responsibilities include attending the broadcast, holding cue cards, working the concerts on the plaza, and organizing audience for live and taped celebrity interviews. Intern must be outgoing, people oriented, responsible, assertive and have excellent organization and communication skills.
Sunday Morning: (NY) A news broadcast reviewing events of the preceding week, celebrating human accomplishments and achievements and journeying through the world of fine art, music, nature, sports, science and Americana. Student should be organized, have strong interpersonal skills and basic computer knowledge.
Face the Nation: (DC) In this weekly national affairs broadcast,
CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent
Bob Schieffer interviews the principal newsmaker(s) of the week. Intern assists with gathering research and videotape, and works with producers in the control room on the day of air. Candidates should be well organized, efficient, and have good editorial judgment.
Up to the Minute: (NY) News every half-hour, combined with newsmaker and topical feature interviews, sports, weather, entertainment and features.
Evening News (Weekend Editions): (NY & DC) This broadcast features reports and interviews by
CBS News correspondents covering events, trends, and issues around the world. Interns must have a strong self-motivated desire to be part of that news team and be willing to contribute to the final product. After demonstrating their journalistic talents, interns will be given a chance to co-produce stories for the broadcast. Common sense is required; strong research and phone skills are necessary for success in the internship and afterwards.
News Productions: (NY) The production company within
CBS News that creates and distributes a diverse mix of original nonfiction and reality-style programming for domestic and international markets, including network and cable television, home video, DVD, audio books and in-flight, as well as schools and libraries.
CBS News Productions and
CBS Eye Too Productions produce programs across a wide spectrum of genres, from history to science to entertainment. Intern should have knowledge of logging tapes, research experience and general administrative duties. Intern must have research and computer skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
Newspath/Newspath Sports: (NY & DC) This unit is responsible for feeding footage to
CBS stations and affiliates. This 24-hour-a-day news service feeds national and international news, weather, sports, medicine and health reports, business and consumer news and a broad range of feature stories from around the world. Intern should have strong written and oral communication skills.
Radio News: (NY & DC)
CBS Radio is America's news leader, serving radio stations with hourly newscasts, instant coverage of breaking stories, special reports, updates, features, customized reports and news feed material. Every day, millions of Americans rely on CBS Radio News for up-to-the-minute information. Interests in broadcast journalism, especially radio, a must. Intern should have basic knowledge of computers and be self-starters. Intern should, also, have fundamental concept of reporting and research.
New Media: (NY) This department is responsible for production of the
CBSNews.com Web site. Students should have an interest in either online journalism, Web design, or Web development. HTML, news writing, and/or Adobe Photoshop experience a plus. Journalism students will assist in writing and producing stories. Design students will assist in graphic design for the site.
Press Office: (NY) The press office serves as the liaison between
CBS News broadcasts/talent and the media. The department consists of a vice president and publicists who are responsible for publicizing each of the national news broadcasts. An internship with the press office is an opportunity to experience public relations in a fast-paced, professional environment. Intern must be well organized, have excellent written and oral communication skills. Computer experience a must.
Advertising & Promotion: (NY) This unit produces the advertising and promotions for all news broadcasts, which includes television, radio, and print promos, as well as affiliate sales tapes. The intern should be interested in television and film production. Have some technical background. Computer skills helpful.
Broadcast Marketing: (NY) This unit deals with all of the
CBS News broadcasts and acts as a liaison between
CBS News and all
CBS affiliates. An intern assigned to this unit must have a great phone manner and be able to juggle several projects at one time. The ideal candidate must be interested in marketing, production and have some sales ability. Depending on skills, an intern will have an opportunity to learn how to book and produce satellite tours and edit excerpts and promos for affiliate use on our Avid. At the same time the candidate must be a self-starter, patient, capable of handling various clerical assignments and must enjoy being a team player. There is a certain amount of typing, research and photocopying. The Intern should have skills in marketing, enjoy writing and not be adverse to pitching in where needed.
CBS News on Logo (NY): News for MTV Network's cable channel for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community.
CBS News on Logo interns will have the opportunity to write, produce, edit and use electronic newsgathering equipment. Strong writing skills a must. Knowledge of the LGBT community preferred.
Interns for the Los Angeles bureau are hired as needed. The London and Tokyo bureaus hire only one to two students per semester. Please note — students interested in the Tokyo bureau must be fluent in Japanese. Interns assist the staff with the daily duties and functions of the particular bureau. Intern must have strong written and oral communication skills. Intern must have computer knowledge and excellent research skills.
