Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters shoots the multiplayer motherload on PSP
After four superb platform-cum-shooting efforts on PS2, Ratchet and camp robot sidekick Clank are set to 'step it up' on PlayStation 3 later this year. But before all that excitement, there's still the not inconsiderable matter of the pair's PSP debut in the appropriately named Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters - and as these first screens show, nothing has been lost in the transition to portable media.

The most important thing to note here is that while later games in the series moved towards an armed combat focus, Size Matters takes things back to classic platform-hopping action. Likewise, after virtually being written out of last year's Ratchet: Gladiator, there's a welcome return for robot Clank as a fully playable character - in this case boasting the ability to pilot a giant version of himself into space for some mind-blowing interstellar combat.

As ever, the reliance on humour and hugely over-the-top weaponry (confirmed killing tools include the Lacerator, Shock Rocket and Bee Mine) elevates Ratchet & Clank way beyond the simple, kiddie-friendly fodder it appears. The story is ludicrous - intentionally - but the action is super-smooth and features the same epic scope and giant levels that really impressed on PS2.

More interesting still are the Wi-Fi multiplayer modes that can cope with up to four players at once. As well as straight Deathmatch and Capture the Flag games, there's also an Iron Lombax mode which involves invading your opposing team's base - the catch being that each map has its own theme, objectives and side effects. Keeping hold of one map's power cell for too long, for instance, might turn you into a giant lump of radioactive waste.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is due for release in the spring.
