LISTEN UP: This Post’s 5 Best Bands

beatleslove.jpg

  • Neiles Life gets the “bloggers making lists of their favorite things at the end of the year” season kicked off with his 25 best albums of 2006, including my personal favorite, from Band of Horses.
  • Don’t let your year-end lists distract you from the best music of the week, though! The Yellow Stereo rounds up new tracks from The Beatles, Sufjan Stevens, and Oasis (who’s still bigger than The Beatles in their own minds).
  • Fluxblog makes a list of four reasons they’re confused that Outkast’s “PJ & The Rooster” wasn’t selected as the lead single for their failed album Idlewild.
  • Muzzle of Bees get themselves arrested by the hip and happenin’ sounds of Tokyo Police Club.
  • Hate Something Beautiful stops for a moment to love something beautiful by posting a couple tracks from Lily Allen.

LISTEN UP: All You Can Eat
    fat.jpg
  • All Things Go posted an unbelievable hip-hop mixtape today, complete with printable album art. So head over there for a mix that includes Clipse, Outkast, the Wu-Tang Clan, T.I. and so much more.
  • But you know what that mix was missing? The Fat Boys. Luckily, today >bounce/oz posted 5 tracks from everybody’s favorite rotund rappers.
  • Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands also has a mix today, only theirs includes M. Ward and Death Cab For Cutie.
  • Jarvis Cocker’s solo album “drops” in the U.K. today, which is why you should visit ThaBombShelter and pick up 3 incredible Pulp-esque tracks.
  • And finally, do you remember Silverchair? We do… kinda. And so does Culture Bully, which is why they have an mp3 of the kids covering Midnight Oil.

LISTEN UP: 3 Is The Magic Number
    killers.jpg
  • Pop Tarts Suck Toasted has three tracks off the new Killers album that comes out next week. Head on over there now to download “Sam’s Town”, “When You Were Young”, and the unfortunately titled “Bling (Confessions Of A King)”.
  • Idolator has three tracks from Outkast’s Idlewild.
  • Water All Around has three tracks from Ben Kweller’s new album, cleverly titled Ben Kweller.
  • Jeddeth has fallen in love with The Features and is posting three tracks today, one off Exhibit A, one from their new EP, and one track that’s never been released.
  • And finally, My Music Trivia has three tracks from Blur, including the classic “Girls & Boys”. Dance your ass off.

LISTEN UP: Or Feel The Rapture
    yorn.jpg
  • Okay, you can either head over to Indieblogheaven and download two tracks off the new Pete Yorn album that came out yesterday, or you can go out and buy the whole thing now. I recommend the latter.
  • Swoon wants to put some damn music in your face with 3 new tracks by The Rapture. Take it. Take it all.
  • Culture Bully posted both an mp3 and video of Outkast’s performance of “Morris Brown” from Letterman. The video is rumored to be 1,000 times more enjoyable than sitting through Idlewild.
  • The Scattermish Bloooog went nuts today, posting a 30 track hip hop/bass/electro mix featuring tracks by Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Fergie, Spank Rock and a whole lot more. Go to town.
  • And finally, if you’ve been kind of down because your iPod doesn’t have nearly enough C&C Music Factory on it, today’s your lucky day. Digital Eargasm is gonna make you sweat.

LISTEN UP: Peace, Love & Andre 3000

tiedyepeace.JPG

  • Have you always sort of enjoyed Outkast’s modern classic “Hey Ya!”, but felt that the song could really use a more mellowed-out easy-listening feel-good vibe? Well you’re in luck hippies, because MyExBestFriend has an acoustic cover that will make you wanna pour some chamomile tea and hum along with the groovy groove.
  • Speaking of hippies, Pitchfork recently compiled a list of the 200 greatest songs from the 60’s and Blogs Are For Dogs actually posted mp3’s for every single one of them. So put that in your pipes and smoke it.
  • Jed and Lucia wouldn’t have been too out of place at Woodstock had they even been born yet, but as such, you’re more likely to find them at Coachella - and at Berkeley Place.
  • I’ve always thought Arcade Fire was the indie rock equivalent of the Grateful Dead, and their live Bowie cover over at Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good is pretty far out…man.
  • With their bearded faces, hippie-dippy band name, and feel-good folk rock tunes, Brothers and Sisters seem like the perfect conclusion to this little tribute to the “peace and love” side of rock & roll - grab a couple of their amazing songs over at MOKB.

  • Indieblogheaven says that Junior Boys are so hot right now.
  • Get over to Gorilla vs Bear for some super indie hipness from Bloc Party and The Knife.
  • MOKB PEELS OUT with a few songs from Pinto.
  • And it’s no sleep ’til Brooklyn ‘01 over at Los Amigos de Durutti, where they’re slangin’ tracks from TV On the Radio and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

YOUTUBULAR: 100 Awesome Music Videos

music vids.jpg
The hipsters over at Pitchforkmedia took a break from being snarky and hating everything (except Band of Horses) and compiled 100 of the most Awesome music videos ever via YouTube. I don’t know what’s better: the fact that they put a ton of work into this, or that they used the word ‘Awesome’ unironically. I’m impressed by both.

Head on over there right now and waste the day away. Don’t miss the videos by A-Ha, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Cee-Lo, David Hasselhoff, Lionel Richie, Outkast, Pat Benetar, The Postal Service, Pulp, R. Kelly, Radiohead, Twisted Sister, and… ok, you know what, just watch them all. Which one is your favorite?
