Weber Ritschie
Weber Ritschie
In a splendid synthesis of high-tech materials and child-centred design, Weber's Ritschie trailer is a truly sophisticated transport solution. Whether carrying two children (up to the age of 6, weighing up to 50kg) or a load of touring luggage, the Ritschie follows faithfully, its ride cushioned by swing-arm suspension. And when you stop, there's a foot-operated parking brake to stop the trailer rolling away. The 14.5kg Ritschie combines light weight with remarkable performance and safety thanks largely to the materials used in its construction. The chassis is made from a honeycomb composite: aluminium walls pressed and bonded to a honeycomb polycarbonate core. The result is a light, very stiff bodyshell which forms the base of the trailer.

The Ritschie is unique, to our knowledge, in that it has a seat that adjusts in depth and angle to suit the child. This seat , and the removeable roof-piece above, are made from foamed polypropylene: the same material used in modern cycle helmets. The children are held in place with a five-point harness, multi-adjustable, and they have plenty of room: the Ritschie measures a generous 64cm wide at shoulder height, and cushions over the wheel-arches act as arm-rests. The roll-over top combines sun, insect and rain protection.

There are plenty of useful options to extend the use of the Ritschie. A lockable touring top is available, to make an effective, waterproof load-carrier, or there's a jogger conversion kit for child-carrying off the bike. A set of woollen cushions offer extra luxury - especially when it's cold - and there's also a very practical hold-all which attaches to the back of the trailer. It's an excellent way to carry all of the extra necessities of family life, and comes with a shoulder strap and mounting for an LED rear light. When it's not in use, the Ritschie folds down to a compact 78 x 58 x 26cm package, and there's an optional cover for extra protection in transit.
