Welcome to these pages.
These records are the result of my spending hundreds of hours walking around the graveyards of North-east Scotland, often assisted by my parents.
Much of the data was collected in 1986 from Aberdeenshire and Banffshire. In 2000 I added many more monumental inscriptions including those found here in Kincardineshire and Forfarshire. The work continues. I am glad to have access to the medium of the Internet to share them.
These records are
not definitive, but I have done my best to record as
many McHardy inscriptions as I can, and will add to
these when time allows. I am always looking for volunteers to add
to this collection. Remember that the graveyards listed represent
only a fraction of the total number of graveyards in this greater
Northeast of Scotland area. I chose mainly the ones closest to
the Highlands of West Aberdeenshire where the surname McHardy
originated; and also those in areas where I knew McHardys
had settled. Not all the graveyards in each Parish mentioned will
have been surveyed.
It must also be remembered that the Highlands of Aberdeenshire and Banffshire represent remote rural areas where many of the population would have been unable to afford the cost of marking a grave. So don't be downhearted if the name you seek does not appear.
Some of the graveyards are attached to Roman Catholic chapels and I have marked these as such. I hope this page is of some assistance to your family history search.
