The following are videos we recommend. Each of these videos have been previewed by a member of our staff. Though some are better than others, all of them are quite good. There are also many other great videos out there and please let us know if we are missing a video that you think is really good and we will add it to our list in the future. For now, use the following videos to educate yourself and your classmates or Kids Can Free the Children chapter members about the many complex issues facing war-affected children throughout the world. You may want to use them when you make your presentations as well! Remember, "Knowledge IS Power" and the more you learn the more powerful you can be in working for change!

Next to each video title, in parentheses, is a guide to that video. It tells you what topic(s) the video covers, how long the video is, and the most appropriate age level for watching the video. At the far right of each guide is a code to let you know where you can borrow the videos. Most of these can be borrowed by a teacher or another adult and are either free of charge to them or extremely cheap. The following codes are used for places that have lending libraries:

King: Montgomery To Memphis

Nominated for an Academy Award, this program captures the eloquence and courage of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. From the Montgomery bus boycott to the assassin's bullet in Memphis, this video records the fiery and triumphant battle of this great man and depicts his philosophy of nonviolence. A great compilation of striking words and images.

Let Us Grow Up

Chronicles 2 days in the lives of 50 children and teenagers who were arrested at Livermore Laboratory in California during the non-violent blockade of the weapons research site in June of 1982. They review their non-violent training, arrive at an important consensus decision, and tell two young reporters why they are involved in the action.

Not In Our Town

An inspiring story of Billings, Montana where the citizens stood up against hate crimes in their town. Lots of interviews with those who committed the crimes and those who fought back. A powerful peace on activism.

Children of Apartheid

Walter Cronkite narrates. Focuses on the contrasting worlds and ideas of black and white youth of South Africa in the 1980s. Shows widespread repression of black children and of their determination to change the system.

Forsaken Cries: The Story of Rwanda
(Topic: Rwanda Time: 35 Mins. Age: 15 and Up CWS)

In 1994, close to one million people were killed in Rwanda. Despite common belief that Rwanda was a tribal war, this was a well-planned and organized genocide with huge economic interests. The video includes historical footage with interviews of genocide survivors and analysis of some of the important issues surrounding this war.

Approach of Dawn

150,000 people were killed in Guatemala's long civil war, many of whom were children. Video looks at three Mayan women who outline different human dimensions of the war.

Haiti: Killing the Dream

Covers and extensive array of important issues by interweaving fottage and interviews with background on the situation in Haiti. Discusses U.S. intervention, refugees, and the determination of the people of Haiti against odds.

If the Mango Tree Could Speak

Massacre At El Mozote

"60 Minutes" startling report of the massacre of 800 mothers and children by U.S.-trained and equipped Salvadoran military in the 1980's. Chilling factual evidence and a frightening but true story.

Pleace Called Chiapas

Examines free trade and other current economic trends and their effect on the indigenous peoples of Chiapas. Looks at the Zapatistas, the indigenous rebel group fighting against these trends.

Romero

Chronicles the transformation of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador form an apolitical priest to a committed leader of the Salvadoran people. Eventually, he was assassinated for speaking out on behalf of El Salvador's poor people.

Under the Gun

One Way to Paradise

For many years, the island of Sri Lanka has been the site of ethnic conflict. This video follows a 15-year-old boy who unwillingly becomes involved in violence and is forced to flee his country.

Panama Deception

Winner of the 1993 Academy Award for best documentary. Explores the rationale for the invasion of Panama by the United States and looks at this action as a foreshadowing of the Gulf War and other future actions.

Silent Shout

An animated story bringing together 4 child characters injured by landmines. Illustrates the devastating effects of mines.

Soldier Boy

In Liberia, thousands of children are forced to fight as soldiers in a civil war that has been raging since 1989. This video profiles a 13-year-old boy who tries to escape the militia. Boy soldiers who have escaped are often rejected by their relatives because they have 'blood on their hands'.

Soldier Child

A haunting and poignant account of the children abducted in Northern Uganda to serve as child soldiers.

State of the World's Children 2000
(Topic: Children Time: 13 Mins. Age: 14 and Up UNICEF)

This video features children and adults combating child poverty in India, overcoming the scars of armed conflict in Sierra Leone, and educating youth about the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Zambia.

Uganda: War of Child Soldiers
(Topic: Children + War Time: 10 Mins. Age: 14 and Up UNICEF)

Over the last three years, more than 8,000 children have been kidnapped from the northern provinces of Uganda by the 'Lord's Resistance Army', and carried to South Sudan. There they are trained to attack the civilian population, and hunt for children in their provinces alongside the rebels. This video documents there story and their rehabilitation process.

Are We the Enemy?

A direct appeal to us from the hearts of the women of Cambodia to ban production of all landmines. Illustrates the heartache caused by landmines in the lives of children and their families.

Killing Fields: Legacy of Landmines

This video on landmines interviews people on both sides of the landmine issue- those who believe they should be banned and those who believe they should not. Warning: there is some graphic footage of landmine injuries.

Land Mines
(Topic: Landmines Time: 13 Minutes Age Level: 14 and Up CWS)

Mike Wallace of "60 Minutes" hosts this video which looks, particularly, at the legacy of landmines in Cambodia. Wallace and his UN guide visit a district of 25,000 people where about 1,000 people have become amputees. There is some good information on how mines work, how they are cleared, and how victims are rehabilitated.

Reclaiming Lives

Put out by the Landmine Survivors Network , this video interviews landmine survivors and leading opponents to the use of landmines. It also outlines the statistics and provides a general understanding of this important issue.

Small Targets
(Topics: Landmines; Children Time: 27 Minutes Age Level: 14 and Up UNICEF)

There are more than 110 million landmines in 68 countries around the world, one mine for every 12 children. Another 100 million are believed to be stockpiled ready for use. Small Targets tells the story of children and landmines in Mozambique.

Arms Supermarket
(Topic: US Arms Sales Time: 15 Minutes Age Level: 15 and Up AFSC)

"60 Minutes" analyzes the growing American industry of arms sales. The video tells us that the U.S. is responsible for selling 72% of all arms to "3rd world" countries. Important for understanding global conflict.

Banking On Life and Debt
(Topic: IMF + World Bank Time: 30 Minutes Age Level: 14 and Up MCC)

Outlines how lending policies of the world's most powerful banks have led to greater national debt and poverty and less social welfare in many nations around the world. Describes "Structural Adjustment Programs" and their negative effect on the citizens of poor countries.

Children of Hiroshima

This is a SLIDE SHOW with a cassette tape. Combines statements and drawings from young Hiroshima survivors.

Columbus Didn't Discover Us

Exposes the legacy of Columbus on indigenous people in Latin America and North America and looks at some of the contemporary issues of this long and sad struggle. Native Americans speak throughout the video.

Raised Voices

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child and how it came into being. Children discuss issues that affect them, organize to improve conditions around them, and form groups to address abuses of their rights.

School of Assassins

Exposes the School of Americas, an institution in Georgia funded by U.S. taxes that trains some of the worst human rights violators in history. Shows the many activists, with leadership from Fr. Roy Bourgeois, working for change.

East Timor Action Network's expose of U.S. government involvement in the genocide in East Timor where 250,000 people have been murdered. Warning: Some quite difficult footage.

Bitter Paradise

The dark side of Canadian foreign policy. Illustrates how Canada increased aid to Indonesia despite the Indonesian government's continuing genocide in East Timor.

Children of Jerusalem

If the World Goes Away

Pete Seeger, Cat Stevens, James Earl Jones, and others produced this allegory in which a mime takes children from around the world on a magical journey, during which they learn that peace is our only choice.

Oasus of Peace

Story of a village in the heart of Israel where Jews and Palestinians have been living in harmony for 25 years. They built a School For Peace, and this video shows this special community within the context of the Middle East conflict.

Sadako Sasaki: Paper Cranes
(Topic: Nuclear; Peace Time: 30 Minutes Age Level: All MCC)

Sadako was 2 years old when Hiroshima was hit with a nuclear bomb. When she was 11, she got leukemia from the long-term effects of the bomb and a friend told her that if she folded 1,000 paper cranes her wish to be well again would be granted. This is her story and the story of the peace cranes.

Journey Home

Story of an 8-year old Croatian girl forced to flee her home because of war. garden and meeting new friends where their new house is under construction. Contains images of refugees and refugee camps.

Yugoslavia: We All Lived Together

The children who lived in Sarajevo during the 16-month siege from 1992 to 1993 experienced untold trauma and violence. These innocent victims of war share their horror, disbelief and suffering-psychological and physical-from the ordeal. This video is a tribute to their courage and strength.
