Cult Controversies:

Bibliography

Religious movements become problematic because some sector of society judges them to be at variance with the mainstream of religious or secular culture. Labeling groups as "cults" (or "sects") sets them apart and invites suspicion. In some instances the suspicion is warranted, but often the process of labeling preceeds knowledge of their distinctive beliefs, behaviors or organizational goals.

The literature on "cults" is vast, and much of it reveals more about the people who write it than the groups they discuss. The bibliography presented here is divided into five distinct literatures: (1) social science, (2) anti-cult, (3) entrepreneurial (usually a sub-category of anti-cult writings), (4) counter-cult, and (5) works of historical interest.

Anyone who explores these literatures from a comparative perspective will have little difficulty grasping the fundamentally different orientations and presuppositions that guide the development of each genre. One caveat with respect to the social science literature -- it is limited to what social scientists have written about anti-cult and and counter-cult movements. Bibliographies of what scholars have written about various religious movements is developed elsewhere on this site.
