Glimpses of God
In recent years, we've noticed an increased interest in spiritual themes in today's popular music outside the Christian subculture. We refer to these faith-inspired examples as Glimpses of God. Some of them are by Christian artists working in the mainstream music industry. Others are nonbelievers who are clearly soul searching. Regardless, these challenging examples give the listener something to think aboutand an open door to discussing matters of faith with non-Christians.
New Glimpses:
Paul Simon
Surprise
Judeo-Christian references aren't unusual in Paul Simon's storied folk-pop career, but religion and soul-searching have rarely played a more prominent part in his lyrics than on his latest album.
Jenny Lewis With the Watson Twins
Rabbit Fur Coat
The lead singer of Rilo Kiley explores subjects of faith and doubt on an album that explores more of her folk, country, and gospel influences.
Bruce Springsteen
We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
He didn't write any of the tunes on this joyous collection of folk classic, but his song choices reveal much about Springsteen and his recent spiritual leanings.
Matisyahu
Youth
Some may consider him a novelty act, but this rapping Jewish reggae star is the real deal, offering devout songs that naturally overlap with Christian beliefs.
