Mizuguchi: "All you need is inspiration"

Rez and Lumines creator talks designing great games at Develop Conference
As part of this year's Develop Conference down in Brighton, Rez and Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi has spoken about his upcoming game titles and what inspires him during the design process.

Following a showing of his latest PSP title Gunpey and a brief chat about the forthcoming Lumines II ("We will be making announcements about the artists and music [that] we will be working with. I am also very interested in the network situation with PS3", Mizuguchi noted), the game designer talked about the process of inspiration, referencing his previous work.

Describing game development as being like a sponge, as reported by Next-gen.biz, Mizuguchi noted that the industry has been sucking up influences from every aspect of culture, entertainment and technology for the last thirty years. Noting that it was this element that had interested him originally, Mizuguchi explained, "You can use influences from anywhere and create anything you like. There does not have to be any shape or format, all you need is inspiration."

Providing examples in his own work, Mizuguchi revealed that Meteos was inspired by today's multi-tasking environment, referencing people texting and speaking at the same time and TV news featuring both news reports and scrolling tickers simultaeneously. Lumines, on the other hand, was birthed from the notion that the PSP itself was a 'visual Walkman': "I was so excited by it. I wanted to create the perfect game for such a system. It could not be racer or an RPG. It had to be a puzzle game with music".

Focussing on upcoming 99 Nights for Xbox 360, Mizuguchi divulged that the idea of witnessing the same story from different perspectives came from coverage of the Iraq war, with the media constantly feeding viewers and readers opposing viewpoints. He also fingered Rashoman, a movie which shows a vicious crime, as witnessed from the perspective of a multitude of characters. "A deep part of being human", Mizuguchi noted, is "the ability to see things from different perspectives".

Also noting that Rez and Space Channel 5 were rooted in dance culture, jazz, surreal art, 1980s music videos and the idea of an intrusive media, while Sega's Manx TT Superbike and Sega Rally were designed to focus on the notion of movement in games, Mizuguchi concluded that, "The deeper you look at people, the more they are the game. A game should fulfill a deep human need or want. Then it can be successful all over the world."
