The Scoop
Rounding up the latest in Christian music … and beyond

by Andree Farias
posted 8/30/04

I was hoping to report something cool from last night's MTV Video Music Awards, but I'm afraid that's impossible. I watched the whole thing — and the whole thing was pitiful.

Relient K is officially the band with coolest album titles ever. After the successes of The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek and Two Lefts Don't Make a Right…But Three Do, the Ohio quartet is just about ready to unveil Mmhmm. Say it with me, Mmhmm. Slated for November 2 release, the boys plan to build momentum for the new album with an exclusive exclusive website that just went live, where fans can sign up for a mailing list, download buddy icons, and view bizarrely hilarious commercials leading up to the commercial bow of the record.

The ever-smiling Joy Williams met up with First Lady Laura Bush at the dedication of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. At the ceremony, Williams performed a soulful rendition of "The Impossible Dream," while Bill Hemmer of CNN served as master of ceremonies. The singer is gearing up for the April 2005 release of her third studio album for Reunion Records.

TAIT is now two members short. According to the band's website, both Lonnie Chapin and Justin York have departed the group to pursue other interests. The recently married Chapin has accepted a job offer elsewhere, while York has joined Steven Curtis Chapman's band for his upcoming All Things New Tour. Auditions are currently being held to decide on the two new TAIT-ers.

Curb recording artist Plumb has revealed in her online journal that she's pregnant! The mom-to-be is currently fulfilling her touring commitments before she goes into hibernation during the fall and early spring to put the finishing touches on her fourth studio album.

For those who still can't get over the loss of Five Iron Frenzy, I'm happy to inform you that Roper, the new brainchild of the restless frontman Reese Roper, has a fully functioning web site up and running. Complete with a music player, a blog, and a ton of fan-friendly features, the site gears up to be right up the alley of Five Iron's many zany fans.

Concert junkies rejoice. There's a slew of new DVDs coming out from some of your favorite music artists. The two biggies are MercyMe and Stacie Orrico, who will be unveiling MercyMe Live (10/26) and Live in Japan (11/02), respectively. Other notables for your viewing enjoyment include The Katinas (Roots Live - 09/07), Casting Crowns (Live from Atlanta - 09/14), Fernando Ortega (Live in St. Paul - 10/12), and Matt Redman (Facedown DVD - 09/07).

A worship leader has the #1 song in the nation. No, Tim Hughes may not be atop Billboard's Hot 100 chart, but his song "Here I Am to Worship" is the most-reproduced song in the U.S., according to the last survey results issued by Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI). According to the CCLI's recently published chart, "Open the Eyes of My Heart" slipped to #2, while perennial chart-topper "Lord I Lift Your Name on High" is now at #3.
