Props to KJ-52 for winning the first GMA Music Award (formerly the Doves) ever for his record label, Tooth & Nail Records. T&N/BEC is in its 10th year, and it's amazing that they've never won one of these beforethey have some excellent music coming from their artists. Next up for KJ? Dear Slim, I won an award. I'm catching-up to you
Robert Randolph and the Family Band recently gave away some free ice cream! The band was a part of the Ben & Jerry's "Free Cone Day" promotion. The first 50,000 people who logged onto a special section of B&J;'s website received a downloadable coupon for the free frozen stuff. Other participating artists include Green Day, the Flaming Lips, Alanis Morissette and Guster. You've gotta check out their list of "Dearly Departed Flavors." RR&TFB is currently opening for Eric Clapton on his European and upcoming U.S. tours.
Steven Curtis Chapman is back in the news. He performed for and introduced President George W. Bush to an audience in Cincinnati on Bush's "Yes, America Can" bus tour. SCC was joined by country music artist Travis Tritt
Jeremy Camp has released his first DVD, in24, which encompasses 24 hours on the road showing fans the ins and outs of a day in the life of Camp on a typical concert day. If you're thinking about becoming a musician, here's a great way to get an idea of the demands on the life of an artist.
Inspirational/AC group Selah will release its next album, Hiding Place, on May 25. What you might not know is that all three of the members of this group (Todd & Nicol Smith, and Allan Hall) have been working on their own solo projects over the past few years, and they'll be released on the same day later this year. Each project offers its own style of musicand none of it sounds at all like Selah's music
Worth the wait? It took nine years, but last month, Michael W. Smith's 1995 album, I'll Lead You Home, was certified platinum (one million units sold) Third Day's Offerings: A Worship Album also went platinum. Smitty's certification makes me wonder what the longest it's ever taken for an album to go platinum. Hmmm.
If you're a fan of the now defunct Paul Colman Trio, you'll be interested to hear that Colman has signed with INPOP Recordsfounded by fellow Aussie Peter Furler, frontman of Newsboysas a solo artist
Finally, an irresistible story: Fifty-six-year-old rocker Alice Cooper recently received an honorary doctorate from Grand Canyon University, a Christian liberal arts college. It's true that Cooper's life has been turned around because of his faith in Christ, but this recent recipient of a Hollywood star on The Walk of Fame still stirs up images of face paint and snakes wrapped around him. I guess there's hope for all of us.
