The Dove Awards are no morethey're now called The GMA Awards. Everyone at the event kept getting it wrong because we've been calling them The Doves for the past 35 years. They had to re-shoot a segment when one of the hosts accidentally used the D-word. You won't know it when you watch the show on the UPN network on May 28th at 8 p.m. ET. See a rundown of the winners here
We visited Steven Curtis Chapman's home last week to listen to some new music from his upcoming project, All Things New. It's a nice country home, but nothing over-the-top. There's a pond in front of the house, and these two identical dogs that were never in the same place at the same timewe were perplexed by how the other one would keep peeking around the corner, almost human-like, to see if it was his turn to mingle with the strange people in his home. And the Chapmans' little adopted children are so cute it hurts.
We also took a drive over to Jaci Velasquez's homeand she let us in! She was telling people about her new record label, Apostrophe Records, and her mother and grandmother made some incredible Mexican food. Jaci's first artist signing is a kid from Indiana named Michael Cook. He'll tickle the ears of John Mayer fans with his breathy-yet-bold sounding vocals, along with his acoustic guitar and keyboard-driven music. He's definitely one to watch.
Last week's Gospel Music Week began with a worship event at the Ryman Auditorium with Michael W. Smith, Martin Smith (Delirious), and Darlene Zschech leading a choir of CCM artists including Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Todd Agnew, George Rowe, Point of Grace, Out of Eden, and dozens more. Anyone in attendance would tell you there was something special happening there that evening, with spontaneous worship bubbling-up all night long. I wish the entire world could've been there. It was a God-honoring place of praise, worship, contentment, holiness.
If you're attending or live near a Southeastern Conference college, keep an eye out for the Hope to a Generation: the 2004 SEC U-Tour, featuring the GMA Award-winning band downhere and musician Matt McGee. Other artists will join this 12 college tour, where a yet-to-be-named speaker will briefly speak about the ever-increasing issues of depression and suicide on college campuses. Yeah, there will be music too, plenty of it, but this tour has a great focus for those struggling with unhealthy thoughts of pain and depression. Get on board with this concert tour if they come to your town later this year.
