Entertaining Faith
Making sense of the messages in mainstream music, movies and TV.
by Todd Hertz and Chris Lutes

X-MEN: The Last Stand
• When a cure is developed to "heal" mutants, the X-Men wrestle with taking the cure in order to fit into society or remaining the way they are. Ask yourself or friends: Would you take the cure? Why or why not? Do you think these mutations are really diseases to be cured? Or are they just how these characters are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14, NIV)? Think of something that seems to make you different. If you could easily change it, would you? Why or why not?

• Read John 15:13. In what ways do you see self-sacrifice in X-Men 3? Does self-sacrifice necessarily mean dying? How could you "lay down your life" as a living sacrifice for someone or something? (See Romans 12:1-2).

• In the X-men movies, mutants are feared and considered outsiders. Who are the outsiders of our world? How did Christ view outsiders? How can you show Christlike love to outsiders?

End of the Spear
• One of the murdered missionaries said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." What does this quote mean to you? What does this quote mean as you try to make sense of the murder of these missionaries? Read Luke 9:23-25.

• What mistakes do you think the murdered missionaries made in their attempts to reach the Waodani tribe? As we think about sharing Christ with others (including our friends), what can we learn from these mistakes?

• Read Romans 8:28. How does this movie demonstrate that good can come out of terrible situations? How has God used your mistakes and bad experiences?

• Steve Saint faced a difficult question: Should he forgive and love the man who killed his father? Why is forgiving others so difficult? Why is it important? See Matthew 18:21-35.

• Throw a stone into a calm lake. How is this movie's story similar to the ripples in the lake? How are "positive ripples" still going outward?

Miracles of Jesus
• In this three-part Discovery Channel TV special, available on DVD at www.discoverystore.com, Christian illusionist Brock Gill objectively investigates whether Jesus' miracles were illusions or reality. Do you think Jesus really did what the Bible says? Why do you think many people have a hard time accepting miracles?

• Study the miracles chapter (p.29-40) in The Case for Faith: Student Edition (Zondervan). How does this chapter agree with what Gill finds? How does it differ? What ideas in the show or book challenge or support what you currently believe about miracles?

• Read Hebrews 11:1 and John 20: 24-29. How do these verses define faith? Should we need evidence of miracles? How are you like Thomas?
