Died Jaroslav Pelikan, 82, a Yale historian of Christianity, on May 13. The renowned scholar and longtime Lutheran had previously taught at Valparaiso University. He joined the Orthodox Church in America in 1998. Pelikan produced the five-volume series The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine and reached a popular audience with Mary Through the Centuries and Jesus Through the Centuries.

Honored Richard Ostling, with the prestigious William A. Reed / Religion News Service Lifetime Achievement Award. Ostling, a religion reporter for the Associated Press (AP) since 1998 and a former news editor of Christianity Today, will retire in July following a 40-year career, but will continue his Bible column for the AP. Ostling also wrote 20 cover stories for Time magazine. The Religion Newswriters Association's board of directors approved him unanimously for the award.

Selected Jonathan Raymond, as president of Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. He begins work in July, replacing retiring Neil Snider, president since 1974. Raymond previously served as president of William and Catherine Booth College in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Selected Marvin Newell, as executive director designate of the Interdenominational Foreign Mission Association of North America (IFMA). Newell will take over ifma, which represents more than 13,000 missionaries, on January 1, 2007. He replaces John Orme, who has headed the association since 1991. Newell is a Moody Graduate School professor of missions and chair of the intercultural studies program.
