The Journey of a Musical Anti-Conformist
Kristal Meyers shares what God's teaching her through her music and her life.
by Todd Hertz
Krystal Meyers has had a huge first year in Christian music with the release of her self-titled album (Essential). Ignite interviewed her about her musical journey, her hit song "Anticonformity," and her thoughts on prayer.
When did you start in music?
Performing has always been my dream. When I was little, I'd tell my mom, "I want to be a singing ballerina for Jesus." Eventually I dropped the ballerina part.
The summer before my freshman year in high school, I went to a Christian summer camp. I wrote "Anticonformity" with a friend in a songwriting class there. A few weeks later the guy who led the songwriting workshops called me about putting the song on a benefit CD. Before I knew it, I was talking to a record company about a recording deal. It was crazy.
Then, things slowed way down. The deal wasn't going anywhere. I wasn't sure if this deal was what God wanted because nothing was really happening. I always thought God wanted me to do this for him, but I wanted him to get me there and not push it on my own. So I just waited. When the time was right, things moved like lightning. It was all God. I thought, This is where I am supposed to be.
What's the message of "Anticonformity?"
My freshman year of high school really affirmed the whole statement of "Anticonformity." Some of my friends started to turn to drugs and stuff. I always stayed strong in my beliefs, but being around all that took a toll on me. I wasn't turning to drugs, but I was getting an attitude problem and I caught myself starting to swear. Eventually, I learned to stand my ground. And that's what the song is really about: Becoming the person God wants you to be, not what the world tells you to be.
What is God teaching you in this musical journey?
I think God is teaching me that I need to be praying 24/7. I have to wake up every day praying, "OK, God, what do you want to teach me today?" I don't know what the day holds and so if I'm not in prayer, I might not react in a godly way. I think the devil brings up things to cause frustration and catch us off guard.
One night my tour manager came in before our show and said, "The sound system is horrible. I want to cancel the show." But earlier, I'd been praying and felt God was going to do something that night to make this an amazing show. I told him that and he said, "OK, we'll play." To date, that's our best show. The shows before that night had felt blah, but that concert was so energizing and uplifting. God is going to allow you to go through challenges, but he'll also bring those days that will energize you and help you press on. And that nightbad sound system or notwas a blessing.
