To the six American mothers whose sons were killed this weekend in Iraq, To the 1,599 American soldiers who have died since the Iraqi War began March 19, 2003, To the mothers of every one of those soldiers, I apologize for all of America......your sons and daughters should be here today, celebrating Mother's Day with you, instead of having been sacrificed in a war that will ultimately have no fairy tale ending, no "And they all lived happily ever after" postscript. On ABC's "This Week" TV program, Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that only a quarter of the 168,000 Iraqi forces being trained and equipped by the U.S.-led coalition ''are able and willing to take on the insurgents.'' That's 42,000 Iraqi troop ready to protect their country. At this rate, it will take five years to train enough Iraqi troops to pull our troops out. Both Levin, and Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel agreed that if Iraqis fail to write a constitution, elect a new government and develop reliable security forces by early next year, Washington will have to rethink its commitment to Iraq. So that's that....remember this date, May 8, 2005.....Mother's Day. This is the day that members of both political parties agreed that it is wrong to be in Iraq. Of course, they didn't say it in those terms, and it's a damn shame, because that means that hundreds or even thousands of more soldiers will die while we're "rethinking our commitment to Iraq". And for every soldier killed while we're busy "rethinking" a war that so many of us knew was wrong from the very start, there will be one more mother who will be without their son or daughter next year on Mother's Day, and for every Mother's Day after that. For all of America, I'm sorry...... Some Mother's Son By Ray Davies Some mother’s son lies in a field Someone has killed some mother’s son today Head blown up by some soldier’s gun While all the mothers stand and wait Some mother’s son ain’t coming home today Some mothers son ain’t got no grave Two soldiers fighting in a trench One soldier glances up to see the sun And dreams of games he played when he was young And then his friend calls out his name It stops his dream and as he turns his head A second later he is dead Some mother’s son lies in a field Back home they put his picture in a frame But all dead soldiers look the same While all the parents stand and wait To meet their children coming home from school Some mother’s son is lying dead Somewhere someone is crying Someone is trying to be so brave But still the world keeps turning Though all the children have gone away Some mother’s son lies in a field But in his mother’s eyes he looks the same As on the day he went away They put his picture on the wall They put flowers in the picture frame Some mothers memory remains (Editor's note: This is an entry from The Faulking Truth blog, ingeniously entitled "Blogfest 2005".
