Katie Couric says good-bye to "Today" show

KMTR-TV Katie Couric has been co-hosting the "Today" show for 15 years, but Wednesday she announced she'll be leaving her position in late May.NEW YORK (KMTR) -
Couric has been hired to solo anchor the "CBS Evening News." She'll be the first woman to hold the prestigious position alone at any network.
Couric made her emotional announcement Wednesday while co-anchoring on the "Today" show.
She says she'll move on at the end of May, after 15 years on the top-rated morning show.
Couric's news put an end to months of speculation, and it's an inspiration to young women hoping to have a career in broadcasting.
University of Oregon journalism student Lindsay Wray says, "I think it's great that a woman is going to be anchoring the news by herself, because that's something we haven't seen before. It's nice to see that the top jobs-you're not going to get shut out of them because you're not a man."
Couric will also contribute to the CBS's "60 Minutes."
NBC isn't saying yet who will replace Couric on the "Today" show, but names that have been mentioned include Ann Curry, Campbell Brown, and Meredith Vierra from "The View."
