2001 APC Changes for Bone Densitometry
In a November 13, 2000 final rule (65 Federal Register 67798), HCFA made revisions to the Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs) used in the Medicare hospital outpatient prospective payment system, effective for services furnished in calendar year 2001. Included in these revisions were changes in the payment for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). As of January 1, 2001, DEXA procedures are considered "new technology" services, assigned to APCs based solely on the cost of the procedures.
