Iran Considers Asian Games boycott

January 5, 2005

Iran is continuing its campaign over the name of the gulf that separates Iran and the Arabian peninsula, insisting that it be called the Persian Gulf, and nothing else.

If not Iran will boycott the 2006 Asian Games.

Iran has noted that the 2006 Asian Games organizers in Doha, Qatar, have frequently used the term "Arabian Gulf" for the body of water that the Iranians say should only be known as the Persian Gulf.

Mohsen Mehr-Alizadeh, the head of Iran's physical education organization, told Iranian state television, "if the historical name of the Persian Gulf is falsified during the Asian Doha games in 2006, Iran will certainly boycott the games," and called the name confusion a "Zionist plot."

In July of 2004 Iran also threatened to boycott the 2005 Islamic Solidarity Games for the same reason, if Saudi Arabia did not use the name Persian Gulf.

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
