Bid News
World Air Games: Austria, Spain and Turkey are the three nations left in the running to host the 2001 World Air Games. Poland withdrew from the race during the meetings of the FAI (Federation Aerosport Internationale) in Paris in March. The host will be chosen on May 29, 1998.
Pan American Games: Medellin Colombia, Guadalajara Mexico and the cities of Santiago de Chile and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic have all have submitted bids for the 2003 Pan Am Games. PASO is scheduled to select a winner on December 5, 1998 at meetings in Panama.
Four US cities have expressed interest in lobbying the USOC for the 2007 Pan-American Games; Houston, Miami, Raleigh/Durham and San Antonio.
The ODESUR has also accepted bids for the 2002 South American Games from Cordoba, Argentina and Arequipa Peru
FISU (Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire) has scheduled May 19th as the date for choosing the host city for the 2001 World University Games. Summer Games bidders are Belgrade, Yugoslavia; Kaoshung Taiwan; Leipzig Germany; and Taugu, Korea.
Finally six cities are in the running for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, Helsinki, Finland; Klagenfurt, Austria; Sion, Switzerland; Poprad-Tatry, Slovakia; Turin, Italy and Zakopane, Poland.
Kuala Lumpur Rationing Water:
Kuala Lumpur has one more difficulty to overcome in preparing for this coming September's Commonwealth Games. The city is currently undergoing a severe drought and water rationing, and has had to ask its citizens for understanding while they use millions of gallons of water to test the new games swimming pool.
