Ongoing Research

The International Games Archive is continually researching the histories of past games, some that have never before been documented. The Archive is searching for the dates of each games and statistical information such as the number of athletes and the number of nations represented at a games. At this time research is in progress on the following games.

1. Central American and Caribbean University Games: The eighth Central American and Caribbean University Games (Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe) were held in Guadalajara, Mexico in July of 1997. The seventh games are currently unaccounted for. The initial six games look like this, though no date information is yet available. 1972 San Juan Puerto Rico, 1975 Mexico City, Mexico, 1977, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic, 1982 Barquisimeto, Venezuela, 1986 Havana, Cuba, 1990 Guatemala City, Guatemala. (Dr. Richard McGehee's article Los Juegos de las Americas, Four Inter-American Multisport Competitions, in Sport and the Global Village, Morgantown WV 1994, is the main source of the current information)

2. African University Games: African newspaper sources state the first All-African University Games were held in Accra, Ghana in 1974, the second in Nairobi, Kenya in December of 1978. A third games were to be held in Lusaka, Zambia in 1982, but this has yet to be confirmed. Any ideas as to if these games have continued?

3. African Student Games Zone VI: A competition held in Zomba, Malawi in September of 1996 was said to be the seventh edition of this regional competition in Africa. The first six editions are yet to be identified. Zone VI in Africa consists of at least the following nations. Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

4. European Olympiade of the Minorities. Alan Guttman mentions this event in one sentence on page 168 of his book Games & Empires: Modern Sports and Cultural Imperialism. The sentence reads In 1985 "athletes from Brittany, Cornwall and other areas of suppressed ethnicity came together for the first "European Olympiade of the Minorities". Recent inquiries to Dr. Guttman have turned up no further leads. Guttman refers to Henning Eichbergs "Trommeltantz der Inuit" in Korpercultur und Identitat (Munster LIT-Verlag) as his source. It would be interesting to find out if these competitions were still in existence.

5. China Japan Korea Junior Games. The Korean Olympic Committee web site states the sixth edition of these Games were held in August of 1998. Where were the first five Games held, and when?

6. The 7th Juegos Deportivos Sudamericanos Escolares were held in 1998. Anyone know where and when the first six Games were held?
