by Charlie Amter Jun 16, 2005, 7:25 AM PT He might fancy himself a cowboy, but Kid Rock's act doesn't play in Nashville. The rap-rocker has had nothing but headaches stemming from a February dust-up with a strip club deejay.
On Monday, Rock pleaded no contest to criminal assault charges for attacking 30-year-old spinmeister Jerry Campos and was given a suspended sentence of 11 months and 29 days. The Detroit native also must complete eight hours of anger-management classes and pay $180 to replace the victim's eyeglasses--which were apparently busted when the self-proclaimed Pimp of the Nation laid the smack down on Campos. And the "Cowboy" singer's tangle with the deejay is not over. On the same day Rock entered his plea, Campos filed a $575,000 civil suit against the musician, alleging Rock's punches caused "severe, disabling and permanent injuries" to the Cedar Hill, Tennessee, resident. This, despite police saying at the time that there were no major injuries to either party. The altercation took place at the Nashville adult entertainment establishment known as Christie's Cabaret, and surveillance video apparently caught Rock clocking Campos. But there are two differing accounts of what exactly went down in the early morning hours of Feb. 6. In the first version, Kid Rock, purportedly under the impression that Campos had insulted one of his friends, demanded an apology from the man behind the turntables. When Campos refused, Rock proceeded to punch him twice in the mug, breaking his glasses and leaving a red bruise on the left side of his face, according to television footage from outside the club. The other take on the incident was simply that Rock was dissatisfied with the music Campos was spinning. "Inside the establishment, there was a squabble concerning--I guess--the selection of music," Sergeant James Smith of the Metropolitan Nashville Police said at a February news conference. "There are not major injuries, but an assault did take place." At the time, the "American Badass" purveyor seemed oblivious to the aftermath of the bar brawl. "They said I broke his glasses? Who?" Rock asked reporters after his release. Rock had no immediate comment on Campos' lawsuit.
